But 3 weeks ago we urgently needed to go to war with them to .... stop them from getting nuclear weapons?  did they maybe mean that their nuclear program was set back "days" ?

 NATO has no obligation.  we attacked Iran.  I'm pretty sure the agreement is pretty specific that NATO only needs to help if a NATO member is attacked, not the other way around.
