Ya, that's about right.  Around here, with the exception of the abnormally low
temps, it's a normal Michigan winter.

Brass monkeys are those little piles of cannon balls that would be next to
cannons.  Since you are shooting at the enemy, they are not well made and
extreme cold can crack them in half. Leading to the term:

Cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey.
