I'm sitting in front of an "old" CRT monitor right now. My netbook is connected to it. "Old" means it was built in 2000 or something like that. The resolution is 1024x768 at 85 Hz. What comes to my mind: o Four terminals of 80x29 characters fit on that screen without overlapping. Not bad. I almost forgot how large 1024x768 is -- my netbook has a native resolution of 1024x600... o Good lord, the colors are amazing! o For some obscure reason, yellow text on blue background looks pretty good. As does green text on black background. I have no idea why, but it looks a lot better than on TFTs. Green is a brilliant color here anyway. It's shiny and bright, yet soft. o Most notably, midnight command with its grey text on a blue background looks good. o It's 85 Hz, that means the mouse is very smooth. I got totally used to the 60 Hz of all my TFT monitors... I used to have a CRT with 100 Hz. :-( o There's a lot of jiggling. When I switch to a window with lots of bright colors (as opposed to my black terminals), the image gets a little smaller. And it makes some small noises from time to time. Lovely. :-) o The blurry text really hurts my eyes. Actually, this is what makes this monitor a PITA to use (if you're not used to it). It's a little better at 800x600 but you're really losing screen estate then. o Using xrandr, it's so easy to switch resolutions. Now that I'm back at a CRT screen, I remember the pain of fiddling with X11 modelines and stuff like that. Today, I simply plug-in the monitor and I'm ready to go. o With the internal screen and WiFi turned off, my netbook runs at 4 Watts. Wow. o Black text on a white background looks a lot better than on my TFT monitors. I guess that's due to the "built-in" "anti- aliasing" of CRT monitors (i.e., they're blurry). I'm browsing through my thesis right now and it looks awesome. o I'm now browsing through screenshots from 1996. They, too, look a lot better than on TFT monitors. Only TFTs expose the real clunkiness of those old GUIs. On a CRT monitor, everything's fine. The fonts look good, the color schemes don't seem odd. Well, okay, the standard X11 background pattern is still ugly. If it wasn't for their huge power usage, I might even go back to CRTs. *sigh* Nostalgia kicks in.
