Ditched  netcfg[1].   It worked very well, though! However, I realized
  that I don't need it. A couple of "ip link  ..."  and  "ip  addr  ..."
  statements do the job as well.

  I'm  on  the  safe  side when using iproute2. netcfg may change in the
  future or it may get superseded by another  tool.  I'm  too  lazy  for
  changes like that.
