       The following letters were preserved by Gordon C. Blanke, son of 
       Theodore L. Blanke, in 1996 and particularly witness the 
       explosive period of homesteading, settlement, and growth in 
       Arizona and the west. As you'll read in Gordon's forward, he 
       transcribed these letters for non-commercial use in posterity. 
       Gordon died only five years later in 2001, but electronic and 
       xeroxed copies of his letters circulated widely in the Blanke 
       family.

       30 years later, I have never seen an electronic copy of these 
       letters, and the xeroxed copies have been copied so many times 
       that OCR has difficulty reading them. Therefore, I'm committing 
       them once again to posterity by transcribing them and posting 
       them in gopherspace, where they will no doubt be read by someone,
       some day. Actually, this gopherhole will be the primary 
       repository, with www to follow in the future.

       As Gordon will say in his own words, some liberties have 
       been taken by him in transcribing idiosyncratic old-timey 
       writing, and I have also touched up the organization of some of 
       his editorializing to make it less intrusive. Gordon's editorials
       are marked Ed.; mine (exceedingly rare) are marked IR. I have not
       altered any meaning. OCR might have swapped some commas for
       periods, but it should be relatively accurate. Enjoy!
