January 22nd, 2019: I received a few computer goodies in the mail yesterday. First was the Musical Memory Mapper, a 1 megabyte RAM expansion and sound chip for my MSX2. While I bought it for the RAM, the sound chip allows the MSX to play Sega Master System and Colecovision games on the MSX, so that's a plus. I'm rather excited at the prospect of playing SubRoc and Cosmic Avenger, two of my favourite Colecovision games, on my MSX. It certainly saves me from having to buy a Colecovision! Second was a box of upgrades for my TRS-80 Model 4P, a Hi-Res Grafyx Improved video card and a FreHD hard drive emulator. The Grafyx was a breeze to install (as I already had my 4P apart for maintenance), but for whatever reason, it didn't work. As the seller is also the manufacturer (who has a stellar reputation), I'm pretty sure I've screwed something up or something came loose when putting the machine back together. I'll work on it later. The FreHD fired up immediately, with four separate 5 megabyte partitions full of TRS-80 stuff (most of which I already had). It'll be a simple matter of transferring the rest of the stuff I need from the original floppies, and the rest of my work from my old hard drive. My only gripe (and it's really just quibbling) is that the FreHD didn't auto-boot the hard drive, needing a boot floppy. It's not a big deal, mind you, the manufacturer has auto-booting HD images for the 4P on his website, it's just a matter of downloading and writing to the SD card. Another added bonus is that the FreHD can mount floppy disk images from the SD card, eliminating the need for both physical floppies and a Gotek drive! I'm looking forward to playing around with my revitalized and upgraded 4P, it'll certainly see more use now that I don't need to accomodate the huge 70 meg external hard drive anymore. Hopefully I can get the Grafyx card going.
