April 19th, 2018: We had a new addition to our family last night. We adopted another cat! Tuesday night, we took our daughter to our local PetSmart (her favourite place) because she wanted to watch the fish. It's cheap entertainment, so of course we indulged her! While there, we stopped by the cat section to see the cats. PetSmart partners with the Winnipeg Humane Society and functions as a satellite branch for adopting cats. They had three on "display", but one in particular spoke to me: an all-black male named Gus. I put my hand up to the glass, and he just flopped onto his back and "played" with my hand. It was love at first sight! The other two cats, a slim Tuxedo cat named Daffodil, and a tiny orange tabby with the unfortunate name "Grandma Longneck" were equally cute and curious. Daffodil had recently been spayed, and was pregnant (and delivered) when she was brought to the humane society as an HBC[1]. Grandma Longneck had just delivered a litter by C-section and was also a recent arrival. But... we didn't really want a second cat. Our cat Czarina Romanova (a Russian Blue purebred) can be a hellcat when she wants to be, so I was pretty leery of bringing a second (much smaller) cat into the empress' domain. It broke my heart to leave them there... as it did my wife. Neither of us could stop thinking of the cats, so while we were texting each other yesterday morning, I caved. I told her to go pick up Gus. Luckily for him, Gus had already been adopted in the interim, so Mrs. IPX brought our daughter to see the other two, to play with the remaining two cats and see which one would be better suited to the family. Our daughter has ADHD and can be pretty loud and boisterous, so a timid cat would be out of the question. Out of the two, Daffodil was the better choice. Quiet, affectionate, and seemingly unconcerned with our daughter's excitedness, she stuck around to play. Grandma Longneck was timid, shy, and reluctant to engage, thus Daffodil won out. They put a deposit on Daffodil pending approval of adoption from the Humane Society. The Missus received word shortly thereafter that we'd been approved, so we made plans to pick up kitty after I got off work and we'd had dinner. Several hours later, we plunked Daffodil's carrier into the living room, and Czarina came running over. She sniffed the carrier, bumped noses with Daffodil, growled a bit, but seemed otherwise unconcerned. We let Daffodil out of her carrier and let her explore her new home. Czarina shadowed her the whole time, sizing her up but wasn't overly aggressive. Apart from the odd hissing and growling, the two seemed to tolerate each other. Certainly not the feline deathmatch I'd anticipated! Guess we'll see how our new kitty reacts to a full day with our daughter... References: [1] HBC = Hit By Car
