============================================================== Weather from the Command Line - Oct. 16, 2019 ============================================================== I recently came across wttr.in[0] and its associated github[1] and it instantly became a part of my main workspace and i3status bar. For those who want a lightweight way of checking the weather, both in your area and any specified area, this can be accessed through the command line, or through the actual website. If you use curl to grab the website, it presents itself in the terminal in a pretty way, and can be piped into other apps to shorten it or grab specific lines, which is how I send the temperature and current weather pattern to my i3status bar. An example of some output for one day in my area is: Weather report: Binghamton .-. Rain, Mist ( ). 51 F (___(__) | 0 mph (The pipe is a down arrow) ' ' ' ' 3 mi ' ' ' ' 0.1 in To curl it into your terminal, just type this: curl wttr.in You can specify if you only want the current day's weather, or if you want a specific location as well. With the command shown above, it will grab your location based on your IP address, so if you're masking your IP you will need to specify a location. I'm from the Binghamton area in New York State, so the way that I get my weather through wttr.in is as follows: curl wttr.in/Binghamton?0 I specify the location by saying "Binghamton" and then I ask for only the current day's weather with the "?0" at the end. More of these specifications and other commands can be found on the wttr.in github page. Be informed on the weather, in a lightweight, terminal-based way!
