06 November 2025: INTRODUCTIONS Slowly, I think I'm beginning to get the hang of this. Writing a first entry to anything is always daunting, so let's start with: what brought me to Gopherspace? The short answer is: YouTube (https://youtube.com). I heard about it on YouTube, I thought it sounded cool, and decided to try it out. The long answer is: I'm exhausted with the http web at the moment. So exhausted with it that I barely know where to begin describing the fatigue of interacting with it on a daily, hourly basis. I lamented to a dear friend the other day, how "being on the Internet" used to be fun. The plethora of YouTube videos (somewhat ironically) being pushed to me of others experiencing this same combination of fatigue and nostalgia eventally led me to a video with a brief introduction to Gopherspace. I had just freshly installed Linux Mint on an old Lenovo Thinkpad I kept purely because I love the keyboard, so I went ahead and jumped straight in. I like Linux Mint very much. I'd use it exclusively if I didn't have to use Windows for employment purposes. But, I am no expert when it comes to anything done via the terminal - barely a beginner, in fact, but an enthusiastic one. Some of my earliest memories are playing around on DOS computers, so I'm not completely new to the text-based format, navigating my way around with keys, and so on. And I'm not going to lie, I love how this feels. There is something so intimate about having only my words to present. I can't tart anything up with fancy formatting, there is nothing I can do to "make it look good". There's no popularity counting going on (that I know of or can see, at least). There are only words, travelling from my screen onto yours. I wonder who you are, reading this- if anyone is, or ever will. I wonder if I will make a little home for myself here, somewhere along this lovely hidden path of the Internet I didn't know existed until yesterday. Perhaps I will only be a passing visitor, huddled in a temporary shelter. Either way, I am grateful that the choice to do so has been kept alive. I will do my best not to leave too much rubbish behind me, I will try to keep things tidy, as far as I'm able with the limited skills that I have. For now, I am going to practise finding my way around this new place. It feels rather like wandering into a cave system with a tiny torch. Until next time, lilac PS - I chatted to some people in com for the first time while we listened to aNONradio together. It was really cool. I really like it here.
