I really enjoy toying with retro software. Not
that there is anything wrong with retro HARDWARE,
of course, far from it. But for all the
imperfection and impurity of emulation, it makes
it very easy to at least approximate the
software experience in question.

I have mostly emulated games, but I have wanted
to try something dry and practical. As I have
worked a bit with databases, it was probably
only a matter of time before I located a copy
of dBASE for DOS. It certainly makes for a
fascinating glimpse at what database work
looked like before SQL became the big thing.
I am using it to keep track of my library
loans, which is a nice and simple use case.

I am normally a Linux guy, but I do like to
dabble with FreeBSD on a VM. It will be a while
until I have the courage to take off the
training wheels, but it's good for practice if
nothing else.
