Kirk, comanding the Federation starship Enterprise. The Organian peace treaty has collapsed, and the Federation is at war with the "Klingon Empire". Joining the Klingons against the Federation are the members of the "Romulan Star Empire". As commander of the Starship U. S. S. Enterprise, your job is to wipe out the Klingon invasion fleet and make the galaxy safe for democracy. Whenever the to continue appears, you can continue the instructions by pressing the "RETURN" key. Pressing any other key will cause the instructions to stop, and the game to begin. . #3 Disclaimer #4 Disclaimer This is version 3.0 of STARTREK. Many new features have been added, both to the game's performance and game details and features. There is a detailed description of installation suggestions, enhancement lists, and bug fixes are located in the file README.TXT which came with this distribution. If the Long Range Sensors are working, you can scan the adjacent quadrants in the galaxy. It can be abbreviated by just a "SEN". CMD:DAMAGES This instructs Lt. Uhura to ask for a damage report of all ship-board systems. This command can be abbreviated by just a "DAM". CMD:DESTRUCT This command is how you can self destruct. When you do this, you, your ship, your crew, and anything in your quadrant is destroyed, and the game ends. Don't try to go too far with your Interval Metered PULSE engines, because they take up alot of valuable time because you are traveling sub-light. CMD:HELP This command is how you use the subspace radio to call the nearest starbase, requesting an "Emergency Long Range Transport" into their quadrant. CMD:SAVE These two commands are how you can save the current game CMD:OLD or restore a previously saved game to or from a DOS file. . #3 Scoring #4 Scoring Scoring is performed only when a game is terminated, won or lost. The method is fairly simple. You get points for good things, and you lose points for bad things. (0 qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq(B You Gain Points (0qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq(B --> 10 points for each ordinary Klingon you kill. --> 50 points for each Commander you kill. --> 200 points for each Super Commander you kill. --> 20 points for each Romulan killed. --> 1 point for each Romulan captured. --> 10 points for every Dilithium crystal mined for the Federation. --> 500 times your average Klingon/stardate kill rate. --> You get a bonus if you win the game, based on your rating: Novice=100, Fair=200, Good=300, Expert=400 . #3 Scoring #4 Scoring (0 qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq(B You Loose Points (0qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq(B --> 200 points if you get yourself killed. --> 100 points for each of your starbases you destroy. --> 100 points for each starship you lose. --> 45 points for each time you had to call a starbase for help. --> 10 points for each planet you destroyed. --> 5 points for each star you destroyed. --> 1 point for each casualty you incurred. If you win a game, your score is checked against the top 10 players for your class of players. If your score ranks within the top 10, you should consider pormotion to the next rank. . #6 Notes on Moving with the Command : #3 Move #4 Move The command MOVE, which can be abreviated to just "M", is what moves you about the universe under warp power. There are two ways to move under warp power. One is "Automatic", and the other "Manual". Automatic means you tell the ships computer where you want to go, and it determines how far to go and in what direction. This means you have to tell the computer the row and collumn in the galaxy, which determines the quadrant, and the row and collumn within that quadrant, which determines the sector. Manual mode means you must specify how far to move in the Up/Down and Left/Right directions. For those of you who are mathematically inclined, you specify a "Delta-X" and "Delta-Y", where a positive X is to the right, neg- ative X is to the left, and positive Y is up, negative Y is down. In manual mode a delta value of 1.2 means move 1 quadrant, and 2 sectors within that quadrant. . #6 Move Automatic When moving automatically you specify where you want to go by giving the computer four numbers. The four numbers are, in order, quadrant row, quad- rant collumn, sector row, and sector collumn. So if you want to move to move to the center of quadrant 1-8, you would enter the command : CMD:MOVE AUTOMATIC 1 8 5 5 (0w w w w(B - or - CMD:M A 1 8 5 5 (0x x x x(B (0w w w w x x x x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqvqqqqqqqqqq(B> Quadrant Row (0x x x x x x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqvqqqqqqqq(B> Quadrant Collumn (0x x x x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqvqqqqqq(B> Sector Row (0x x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqvqqqq(B> Sector Collumn Moving automatically reqires the ships computers be fully operational. . #6 More on Moving with the Command : #3 Move #4 Move #6 Manual (0lqqqqqqqqqqqqu(B Directions (0tqqqqqqqqqqqk(B When moving manually you specify the (0x x(B delta-X and delta-Y in which you want (0x(B Positive Y (0x(B to move. First X then Y. A positive X (0x(B ^ (0x(B moves to the right, and negative moves (0x x x(B to the left. A positive Y moves up, (0x \x/ x(B and a negative Y moves down. (0x(B Negative X <(0qqqqqnqqqqq(B> Positive X (0x(B (0x /x\ x(B Delta values are expressed as two (0x x x(B digits separated by a decimal point. (0x(B v (0x(B For example, 1.2 means 1 quadrant and 2 (0x(B Negative Y (0x(B sectors, and -0.5 means back (or down) (0x x(B 5 sectors. The decimal point may be (0mqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqj(B omitted if the sector number is zero. Here are some examples of valid commands to move in the manual mode : CMD:M M 0 .1 CMD:M M 1.5 -.5 CMD:M M -1 -1.1 . #6 Notes on Moving with the Command : #3 Impulse #4 Impulse NOTE : The format for the IMPULSE command is the same as the MOVE command. In other words, to move under Interval Metered PULSE engines, substitute IMPULSE with the command MOVE. Example : CMD:IMPULSE MANUALLY 1.3 -.7 instead of CMD:MOVE MANUALLY 1.3 -.7 - or - CMD:IMPULSE AUTOMATIC 2 3 5 7 instead of CMD:MOVE AUTOMATIC 2 3 5 7 . #3 Are you ready to begin ? #4 Are you ready to begin ? By now, you should have a basic knowlege of the game. At least enough to get started. There are alot more detailed instructions following this page, but this might be a good point to get your space legs. Once you have started the game, you can return to these instructions by entering in the command "INSTRUCTIONS". Remember the basic commands we know so far are : TERMINATE - To terminate the current game, and see your score. EMERGENCY or - To exit the current game quickly, saving the game EXIT on the file SAVEWORK.SAV. MOVE - To move around under warp speed. IMPULSE - To move around under impulse power. SENSORS - Use the longrange sensors to see adjacent quadrants. PHASERS - Shoot enemies with phasers. PHOTONS - Shoot enemies with 1, 2, or 3 photon torpedos. DESTRUCT - To activate the Enterprise's self destruct sequence. HELP - To ask the nearest starbase for help. INSTRUCTIONS - Show these instructions. COMMAND - To get a list of all valid commands or complete description of each command. Press "RETURN" to continue instructions, or any other key to begin game. . #6 Commands, Prompts and Control Keys All of the commands in STARTREK can be abbreviated for ease of typing. For a list of the commands, and their smallest allowable abbreviations, enter in the "COMMAND" command. Most of the commands can be entered in one line, even with all the choices and options. If a required piece of infor- mation is not included on the command line, then you will be prompted. There are two kinds of prompts that can occur in STARTREK. They are the one-key, menu selection prompts, and multiple character string prompts. The "One-Key" or "Menu-Selection" prompts ask you to chose one of many options. These prompts will always have single characters in bold. This means these are the only valid choices you may make. Pressing any other key than the ones offered will do nothing but ring the bell. When making a selection to the "One-Key" prompts, you only have to press the desired key, and no "RETURN" afterwards. If you are in a command, and you want to abort the command, without taking any actions, you can press the (escape) key when a "One-Key" prompt occurs. . #6 Commands, Prompts and Control Keys Multiple character string prompts will not have bold characters in them, and the command must be terminated by a "RETURN". If you are being prompted by a multiple characters string prompt in a command that you want to abort without taking any action, enter the string ABORT or QUIT, and the command will terminate. Examples : One Key Prompt : (0lqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqk(B (0x(B Do you intend to ram the Klingon?(Y or N): (0x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqj(B String Prompt : (0lqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqk(B (0x(B Enter name of file to save game on : (0x(B (0mqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqj(B . #6 Game Hints Enemies recharge during your absence. If you leave a quadrant cont- aining a weakened enemy, when you return to that quadrant, he will be strong again. Also, each time you enter a quadrant, the positions of everything in the quadrant (except your ship) are randomized, to save you the trouble of trying to remember where everything in the quadrant is. Notice that this refers only to the positions of things in the quadrant. The numbers of each kind of thing are not changed. If you kill something, it stays dead. Each type of enemy behaves differently. Regular Klingons are the most numerous, and are the weakest. Regular Klingons also stay put, and don't move around when you are in the same quadrant. Klingon Commanders are fewer but are about twice as strong as regular Klingons. Commanders do not stay put. If they have enough energy, they will try to advance towards you. Be very wary of Commanders next to you. They have been known to take desparate action. Commanders also have a thing called a "Long- Range Tractor Beam" which they can use, at random intervals, to yank you away from what you are doing and into their quadrant, to do battle with them. . #6 More Game Hints Klingon Super Commanders are even worse! They are about three times stronger than regular Klingons, and even though they stay put while you are in the same quadrant with them, when you are not around, they will be heading for one of your starbases. If they reach a quadrant with one of your starbases, your base won't last long, so you had better take not take your time to get there to defend your starbase. The Romulans are not as serious a threat to the federation as the Klingons. For one thing, there are not as many of them. For another, the Romulans are not as treacherous. However, Romulans are not to be trifled with, especially when you are in violation of the "Romulan Neutral zone", which is, whenever you happen to be near one. They may not be obvious because the Romulans have a cloaking device which renders them invisible. When they are cloaked, the space star pattern in their sector is slightly distorted, and phasers will not be able to lock onto them. When they fire at you, they decloak for just an instant. . #6 More Game Hints The advantages are not all on the side of the enemy. Your ship is more powerful, and has better weapons. Besides, in this galaxy there are from two to five starbases, at which you can stop to refuel and lick your wounds, safe from attack or tractor beams. But you had best not dally there too long, since time is not on your side. The Klingons are not just after you; They are attacking the entire Federation. There is always a finite "time left", which is how much longer the Federation can hold out if you just sit on your fat behind and do nothing. As you wipe out Klingons, you reduce the rate at which the invasion fleet weakens the federation, and so the "time left" until the Federation collapses may actually increase. Since Klingons are the main threat to the Federation, the Romulans do not figure into the "time left". In fact, you need not kill all the Romulans to win. If you can get all the Klingons, the Federation will abide forever, and you have won the game. . #6 More Game Hints Space is vast, and it takes precious time to move from one place to another. Naturally the higher your "Warp Factor" the less time it takes to move. In comparison, other things happen so quickly that we assume they take no time at all. Two ways that time can pass are when you move, or when you issue a command to sit still and rest for a period of time. You will sometimes want to do the latter, since the various devices aboard your starship may be damaged and require time to repair. Of course, repairs can be made more quickly at a starbase than they can in flight. In addition to Klingons, Romulans and starbases, the galaxy contains (surprise) stars. Mostly, stars are a nuisance and just get in your way. You can trigger a star into going nova by shooting one of your photon torpedoes at it. When a star novas, it does a lot of damage to anything immediately adjacent to it. If another star is adjacent to a nova, it too will go nova. Stars may also occasionally go supernova; a supernova in a quadrant destroys everything in the quadrant and makes the quadrant permanently uninhabitable. You may "jump over" a quadrant containing a supernova when you move, but you should not stop there. . #6 More Game Hints Supernovas may happen spontaneously, without provocation. If a supernova occurs in the same quadrant you are in, your starship has an "Emergency Automatic Override" which picks some random direction and some random warp factor, and tries to throw you clear of the supernova. If the supernova occurs in some other quadrant, you just get a warning message from starfleet about it (provided, of course, that your subspace radio is working). Also, a few planets are scattered through the galaxy. These can sometimes be a great help since some of them will have "Dilithium Crystals", which are capable of replenishing the ship's energy supply. You can either beam down to the planet surface using the transporter, or take the shuttle craft "Galileo". Once dilithium crystals have been brought back from the ship and loaded into your ship, your shield and ships energy will remain at full strength, and you can warp safely at any warp power (for as long as the the crystals last. When you dock, all of your mined dilithium crystals are given to the starbase, for the common good of the Federation. . #6 Summary Star Trek is a rich game, full of detail. These instructions are written at a moderate level, no attempt has been made fully to describe everything about the game, but there is quite a bit more here than you need to get started. If you are new to the game, just get a rough idea of the kinds of commands available, and start playing. After a game or two you will have learned everything important, and the detailed command descriptions which follow will be a lot more meaningful to you. . #3 Command Review #4 Command Review (0lqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqk(B (0x(B (0x(B (0x(B You have weapons: PHASERS and PHOTONS.
