About
............................................................
I "wrote" a review of Jeremy Baily's video installation /The
Future of Television/. The review was published in KAPSULA
Magazine in July 2014. I say "wrote" because the review is a
collection of real and fake YouTube comments. In fact, the
review is designed and presented as the comments section of
one of Jeremy's YouTube videos. The real comments were found
throughout Jeremy's channel. I selected comments that were
angry, crude, funny, ironic, stupid, ignorant, and
sincere. I shuffled these around and spliced in my own text
reflecting, contrasting, and shaping various ideas about art
making, online performance, digital environments, sincerity,
and irony.
The theme of this issue of KAPSULA was anger, and indeed
there is a lot of anger towards artists like Jeremy
Baily. There's also a lot of delightful joy, and I hoped to
capture the strong polarities in his work: how he can be
simultaneously loved and hated. With these strong emotions
comes resilience too them, for those that submit themselves
to these environments. Many years later as I look back on
the writing and Jeremy's work, I'm just so amazed that he
could be the clever, kind person I remember him to be in
spite of the hate he faced online.
