Originally, it was based on Ubuntu LTS. While an LTS base has its advantages, it eventually created significant limitations for the TUXEDO Computers development team. The main issues were outdated packages during the long release cycle and Canonical pushing users toward Snap packages while dropping native options. To gain more control, flexibility, and access to recent software without the burden of maintaining massive custom repositories on their own servers, the team decided to move their base to Debian Testing. Do not let the “Testing” label fool you. Debian Testing is remarkably stable, often outperforming many rolling and semi-rolling distributions in day-to-day reliability. Because any major base migration can introduce regressions, TUXEDO is taking an open beta approach and releasing frequent ISO updates to guarantee the final release is mature. Following the latest release from the TUXEDO team, I tested the new ISO firsthand. Here is a breakdown of the key improvements and new features. (BUTTON) Table of Contents * Stronger Full-Disk Encryption with UKI * Better Alternative to wpa_supplicant * Improved Branded Installer * Updated In-House Packages & Btrfs Integration * Download & Feedback Stronger Full-Disk Encryption with UKI I always recommend enabling full-disk encryption when installing a fresh Linux distribution. It is an essential layer of protection for your data if your laptop or PC is lost or stolen, preventing unauthorized offline access to your private files and system setup. Calamares Btrfs and LUKS partitioning (BUTTON) Setting up full-disk encryption in the TUXEDO OS Calamares installer, which now enables UKI by default for stronger boot security. To make full-disk encryption even more solid and reliable in this new ISO, TUXEDO developers configured the installer to automatically use a Unified Kernel Image (UKI) as the default boot entry when full-disk encryption is selected during installation. A UKI combines the kernel, initramfs, and startup components into a single file, which improves boot security and hardware TPM integration. It is worth noting that this new ISO does not yet fully support Secure Boot because it ships with an unsigned kernel. While Secure Boot is controlled by Microsoft and requires navigating their paid signing process, a signed kernel remains on the TUXEDO roadmap for a future update anyway. To avoid LUKS passphrase headaches, entering your password is much smoother in this release. The prompt now supports localized keyboard layouts, fixing the exact pain I have faced where startup defaults to a US keymap with no way to switch, forcing me to play a guessing game with my layout just to hit the correct passphrase. As an extra fallback, the installer creates a secondary GRUB entry if the default UKI entry fails to boot for any reason. And not to forget, this new ISO features Linux kernel 7.1.13 out of the box. How to Encrypt a Partition or Disk on Linux Related Guide Secure Your Data: How to Encrypt a Partition or Disk on Linux Read More Better Alternative to wpa_supplicant In the open source world, choices should always be logical and backed by clear technical arguments. In this build, TUXEDO OS switches its network management service (or as we call it in the Linux world, a daemon), replacing the venerable wpa_supplicant with iwd, a modern wireless daemon maintained by Intel. The "Daemon" Dilemma Speaking of daemons, I once spent time digging through dictionaries, wikis, and books to uncover the original meaning of the word “daemon,” only to find that its definition is just as fragmented as the Linux community itself! TUXEDO’s core argument for the switch is straightforward: iwd is faster, leaner, and actively maintained (by the “suspicious” Intel), which means less maintenance overhead for their team long-term compared to the older wpa_supplicant stack. While I haven’t run extensive side-by-side benchmarks over a long period to declare a definitive winner, both have delivered a solid experience in my daily usage. Have you noticed a difference between the two on your hardware? If you plan to test this release, keep in mind that switching network backends requires a clean install, as the change resets your Wi-Fi configurations and could easily leave you without wireless access if misconfigured. That, of course, is precisely why this open beta testing window exists. In this new ISO release, Calamares receives both under-the-hood stability fixes and an updated visual identity. On the bug fix front, a frustrating crash that occurred when reaching the Users setup module in the previous release has been resolved. Beyond stability, the installer’s branding was updated to reflect the evolving identity of TUXEDO OS, an improvement that I believe is just as important nowadays as a bug fix. This includes TUXEDO Control Center, tuxedo-base-files, and tuxedo-btrfs, with the latter two receiving fresh updates in this new ISO release. That tuxedo-btrfs update is particularly notable because snapshot functionality is deeply integrated by default into TUXEDO OS’s new Debian base. You can easily pick a snapshot directly from the GRUB menu if something goes wrong with your installation, a feature that is especially important for enterprise customers.
