# Gopher on Period-Appropriate Hardware I like reading the 'about' pages on gopher holes, and finding interesting tidbits. The downlinkomega gopher site [0] runs on a Windows 95 486 box, perfectly appropriate for a gopher server. As expected, the response is quite speedy, despite the limited hardware. While it was released in 2023 (a bit after Debian 12 Bookworm, the release it is based on), I typically lag a couple of years behind even stable releases on servers. Devuan provides the same old, comfortable Debian experience that those of you who have been messing with this stuff for years may remember. If you value stability, there is seldom a need for upgrades, apart from security. And I like that I can still get those security updates two releases back, giving me about five or six years between OS upgrades. Of course, this would be the case with Debian proper, but I won't let systemd stand in the way of my mental well-being when it comes to my own server maintenance. Despite systemd being a given at this point in mainstream linux distros, it has always conflicted with my desire for simplicity. I'm happy there are non-systemd linux options still.
