How do you cope with loneliness, Anonymous Counsellor?

In nearly 4 decade I've never had any friends. Normally I'm pretty good at being comfortable with my solitude but every so often it overwhelms me and I start to feel like garbage. How do you deal with that? Right now books and games (my usual go to) aren't enough and while I tend to just sleep a lot, I can't sleep all the time.

Please give me some ideas on how to ignore/cope with that, or suggestions for things to do to occupy my time. I finally finished sorting my stamp collection recently which was fun, but now I need something else to obsess with.

Hello OP ,Anonymous Counsellor here, have you tried to make some friends and actually talking to people and participating in social events ? Instead of running away from your loneliness and obsessing yourself with mediums which only results in you being even more lonely.

I have, but I don't know how to interact with people because my brain doesn't understand it. The obsessive mediums don't make me lonely, it's just sometimes they aren't sufficient to make me not feel lonely.

I guess there's no solution, though. Oh well...I have a good sci-fi book that has kept me occupied now. That's fun.

         >>3 try to join a hobby meet, they are a great environment to learn to socialise. Everyone there already has a common interest and opinions about it - I’m sure there’s a sci-fi book group you could piggyback. Don’t force connections, just participate and gradually it will get easier.

(I realise that does’t actually answer your question. IMO, the only real solution for loneliness is company. Humans have evolved to thrive in groups and get depressed when alone. Even if you are good at dealing with it, you are really just ignoring the root problem)

You just dont need to be lonely. How about we kill some time in a conversation? Thats temporary solution, but so is every thing in life. Dm me in telegram for example: @cowsha Or leave any other contact info. Ofc if you wish to.

Psshh!!! Yeah right!!! Didn't Mommy ever tell you not to accept DM invitations from strangers right after (well....3 months after) declaring yourself to be mentally weak and vulnerable?! C'mon, OP...use your HEAD!

         >>4 -kun's got the right idea--it will be infinitely more difficult at first but the solutions to your problem actually exist in other people and the outside world, NOT bakayaros on the internet!!

So now you know!! and Knowing's half the fuckin' battle, dude!!!

I forgot I posted this thread. But, yes, I was diagnosed with that as a kid back before they slapped that label on everybody. So, I know I'm legitimately autistic and not pretend autistic. Maybe I need to chill with some other autistic people?

Too shy for that, but thank you kind sir.

Also I thought I posted it in another thread, but I guess not. Besides the autism, I think the biggest reason I'm like this now is because I was sexually abused as a child, by 3 different people. There's a lot of bad pictures of me on the internet when I was really young (I assume they're still out there anyway, p's tend to collect that stuff forever). I think that kinda fucked me up and made me isolate hard. I spent all my time inside on the computer or reading books, so it totally stunted my ability to interact with people.

It's alright, though. I'm not unhappy usually, I just get randomly lonely and it sucks but I also don't like being with other people. I hit on a really cute girl on the subway recently because numerous times, she'd look into my eyes as she got off, then I asked her for her number one day and got it. So maybe she'll keep me occupied. She likes my paintings and enjoys reading and photography, so that could be nice. I dumped my ex because she was fucking insane.

I'm 39 so I don't think I need to worry about getting scammed or something by someone on Telegram lol, but I have no plans to chat to anon, even if it was a genuine offer. I'm too shy to do that. Weird, because I can hit on a random girl I've never talked to before.

All you need is a woman anyway. Other dudes are a waste of time, and I've just given up on them, I'd rather spend time with my wife than anyone else.

It can be difficult for some people to talk with women.
And you do need guy friends too!

I have no problem, they even like the awkwardness at times. I hit on a really cute girl 17 years younger than me and got her number recently, so I've been hanging out with her a bit. Probably nothing serious due to the age gap. That's the annoying thing. I'm alright looking (don't look anywhere near my age) and I'm "intellectually interesting" so I can get girls way younger than me, but most aren't looking to date a guy my age long term. Well, not yet.

I'm curious to see how you approach people you don't know.
I don't have a problem talking with women, and I don't really feel awkward about it. But approaching a stranger who you noticed looking at you (like you mentioned in >>12) is something that I can't imagine doing. I have no idea how it would be done without scaring the other person or coming off extremely awkward. If there is some existing connection with the other person, like with a coworker or whatever, then it doesn't seem too intimidating to talk to her or ask for her number. It's approaching a complete stranger that I can't imagine doing.
I'm kind of okay with not having that ability, though.
