         I'd like to learn to communicate using a Sign Language, but I'm not sure which.
         I live in Britain, so probably BSL.
         
         Does anyone have experience with a Sign Language? Anyone else learning one?

         I have a close friend who's mute and primarily uses sign language. We live continents apart and communicate via IM, so I don't need to know it to communicate with her, but it has still got me interested in learning BSL myself. I currently only know fingerspelling and a handful of isolated words.

         There are different types of sign language but are they compatible? It seems like they are pretty different on the surface.

         I'm learning ASL with my gf, it's very fun!

         BSL is to ASL as French is to English. Both are influential, and may have words (signs) that overlap, but they're different languages. Fingerspelling signs aren't the same in both languages.
