       On Monday journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to
       12 years hard labour for what the official KCNA mouthpiece called
       a "grave crime committed against the [North] Korean nation and
       their illegal border crossing," although it is not at all clear
       that the women did even in fact intrude on Korean territory.
       Their camera man apparently escaped. It seems highly likely they
       will be the first Americans to be interred in what is one of the
       most inhospitable prison systems on earth, and that is only if
       they are remanded to the high-profile camps. If they are sent to
       the gulag of the rank and file offender, they will probably never
       be seen again.
        
       North Korean experts believe the move is the North's way of
       acquiring a bargaining chip for their recent and widely condemned
       missile launch and most recent nuclear test. Such a cold and
       calculated manoeuvre  would not be out of character for a country
       and a leader who have repeatedly demonstrated that to them human
       life is merely an means to consolidating their oppressive grip on
       power, and what concerns me most is that this sick act may in
       fact pay off for them again.
