Educate Beginners

Zerg Hex has several unique game mechanics that are not fully
transparent to beginners. There could be some more guidance for
new players.
The experienced players are typically helpful and explain the
game mechanics, but there is still room for improvement.
I do not have a full fledged proposal, therefore I hope there
are also ideas from other persons.
Some ideas I have on my mind for terrans:
[li]Single player tutorial. Like list of tasks to achieve that
help you to understand the general mechanics. Maybe gives you a
funny icon in the leaderboard if you finished all tasks
successfully[/li]
[li]Random tips in the loading screen and ingame[/li]
[li]A warning if a situation occurs due to missing knowledge of
fundamental game mechanics (i.e. marines not shooting)[/li]
[li]Game objective (kill spawners in mid)[/li]
[li]Dangers? Like big spine[/li]
There are so many situations new players will run into that are
rather frustrating.
Running around (or standing) with marines that are out of energy
and you, as a zerg player, can feel their frustration as they
move and try to shoot.
Or new players that gather a group of marines and run towards
big spine just to lose all of them due to the splash.
Or a significant imbalance between number of marines, energy
production and incoming zergs.
Building sheep farms outside of bases if there is plenty of
space inside the base.
As a zerg player, I let new terran players typically experiment
and leave them alone until all other players are dead, but I
also killed several new players accidentally already :(
And some ideas for zergs:
[li]Make it clear that they do not need additional hatcheries to
get more units (worst common mistake I see)[/li]
[li]Make it clear to build unit spawners to automatically create
units[/li]
[li]Make it clear that mid hatchery contains upgrades for
supply[/li]
[li](Maybe) Make it clear that armor upgrades are misleading.
They do not improve armor, they improve available tech[/li]
[li]Explain how mineral spawners and unit spawners work
together[/li]
The guidance should only cover game mechanics and fundamentals
(e.g., energy to shoot), it should not cover general strategy
and tactics (e.g., be aggressive, or build in this order)

Yep, tutorial is definetely something we need, the game is, as
you said, quite complicated.
I made a blueprint terran game in practise mode where I go a
over a lot of stuff while doing it. (I'm a professional, so I
used pause, typed a message, unpaused xd, high quality guide)
HTML https://drive.google.com/file/d/12X8Xk2miFHV0wy0k4PAASYm6GDrbpM1n/view?usp=sharing<br
/>(replay file)
It's a bit more in-depth than what you described, and while it's
far from perfect, I believe a good player (regarding mechanics,
so someone that is diamond level and upwards) can quickly become
a mid maybe even top tier player x)
Might even be too overwhelming for new players. Try watching it
several times, when I was a noob and played with Oayoo I
rewatched the game from his perspective at least 4 times and
that was a real game, not some simplified test game where zerg
does nothing x) There is a lot you can learn from this replay I
feel like.

I completely agree, even a replay at the beginning of the game
showing some basic mechanics and strategies. Sort of like
storymode sc2.

Zerg Hunters (arcade map) actually has decent tutorial (though
not perfect imo) and good in game tips displayed over time.
Sadly most people still are really misplaying the game, but the
effort has really been there and I had no issues becoming good
in that game quickly without having a veteran teach me every
little bit. If you have 15min spare time, go check out zerg
hunters in a solo game so you can watch the tutorial & read some
of the tips popping up while playing.
Ideally Wmaster checks it out and maybe gathers some
inspiration?

yea i want to push this to top again.
A howto should be voted on each match. I don't think it should
be based on bank because players delete their bank because of
the leaderboard.

what about changing some settings to make certain options
unavailable early game. like make advanced batteries available
after 10 min or something, and same with power phylons (I see
new players making this early game way too often). I figure if
they are fewer options early game then new players will be at
less of a disadvantage.
and what about changing the loading screen to show suggested
tech building placements? lots of times i see tech poorly
placed.

There are plenty of resources out there to look up how the game
is supposed to be played. I'm not the youngest anymore but even
I figured out that if you want to know something especially
videogame related you can use youtube or google in general to
find lots of information on even the most niche games out there.
When I started playing zerg hex that's exactly what I did. Now
back in february there wasn't much to go by but even then I
found some old gameplay vids that gave me a basic understanding.
Now there is plenty of videos not only from me but also a couple
others that you can watch and get an even better idea than was
possible back then. Even that outdated wiki still provides
valuable information. So if new players don't use that, I don't
know if forcing additional information on them is the way to go
as they clearly ignored everything else that would help them
understand the game.
Also don't forget that most of the knowledge and experience only
comes from playing. So naturally they will fail the first view
attempts, see that it can be done differently, adapt and get
better. Or not, as some just intentionally fool around for fun
which is fine, but nothing you can 'fix'.

I'd argue that if i have to google how to play the game, then
maybe the game ain't doing it well by itself.

"orbital defender apm" has an intro in its game that could be
modeled for hex. it's frustrating playing games with first time
players and i want to keep pushing this to the front.
maybe include an MIA button, similar to the hud buttons in
undead assault chronicles, so players can communicate quicker?
