Hi, the exit tickets I use only require a quick response. With
math, it's easy, because I just post a problem or two on the
board, which they copy and answer on their exit ticket (the
tickets are a decent size). It doesn't take them more than 5
minutes total. Also, if it's done right before recess, they
want to finish up ASAP, so that they can go out. Sometimes, I
will dictate a short sentence, and see if they are marking it,
capitalizing, punctuating and spelling key words appropriately.
Sometimes, I'll ask a question to see if they remember the key
vocabulary from a previous lesson. Everything is short and
sweet. I don't do exit tickets super often, but I'm motivated
to use them more after viewing this discussion board.

In my class we have 2 reading groups. The higher group (10
boys) is reading "The Whipping Boy" and the lower group (6 boys)
is reading "The Chocolate Touch." I downloaded worksheets for
both groups. The Whipping Boy sheets include very difficult
vocabulary words (must give definitions from context) plus
comprehension questions. A few weeks ago, I paired up the boys
in the Whipping Boy group. They like working together and
brainstorming for the answers. They are now much more eager to
complete their reading assignments.

I'm a very big fan of using "Thumbs Up/Down", because it lets me
quickly survey the class and get a sense of how many of the boys
are thinking in the direction I'd like them to be going in. It's
good for both factual questions and analysis questions. I always
call on someone to explain why they held their thumb one way or
the other. Usually I call on one boy for each "side" to give his
answer, and then I call on another boy from each "side" to
explain the reasoning. That starts a discussion and lets me
check to see who's following what's been said. I also almost
never call on students based on hand-raising. Hand-raising is
good for letting me know if they have a question, but for my
questions I always call randomly. It does a very good job of
stirring students who might not otherwise have been paying
attention, and in making sure that I hear from everybody at
least once per period. In 3 or 4 questions and follow-up
questions, I can get a decent survey of the whole class.
I use a lot of graphic organizers, especially for Social
Studies. What I do there is basically "guided notes" where I
give out a graphic organizer and the students fill it in over
the course of the class. It helps them know what information is
especially important and worth writing down, which builds their
note-taking skills. It also gives them an incentive to listen
during class, because they know that their graphic organizers
will be checked. That then gives me feedback as to who's paying
attention and who's understanding the lesson and who might need
a bit more help.

Sometimes I will say completion of an assignment is "your ticket
to recess." Real tickets are more impressive --will try to
acquire the tickets. I am considering using real tickets as
entrance fees for recess, gym, and computers. Changing tone of
voice --never thought of it-- have done it occasionally but not
often enough. I use partners in completion of reading
comprehension sheets but never thought of partners in math
--good idea. I am reluctant to call boys to the board, but I
like Mr. L's idea of "public performer" --plan to try it out.
