Closing Statements!
As Daren mentioned, I probably would have never read this book
on my own. Honestly, I was not much of a reader before YTT,
which I always wanted to change, but rather I would use my time
scrolling through social media. Not anymore! I have really
enjoyed taking the extra time I have in the day or time at night
before bed, to read and reflect. I won’t lie, at times I was
like what the heck did I just read? I also had to re-read some
parts of the book, and even look up some words ha! But I put in
the time and really felt the benefit. I really loved how the
travel tips assisted you in understanding what you just read and
helped you apply it to your life. As I mentioned in my last
post, there were a few things I found myself re-writing similar
thoughts and statements as I answered the questions. A lot of it
relates to my life as a kid and growing up Catholic, still to
this day dealing with a very Catholic family that I do not see
eye to eye with. This book helped me be OK that I don’t. It
made me realize there are other ways to be spiritual and believe
in something greater than you. Other ways to be a good, loyal,
kind person. This book really made me reflect a lot, more than
I probably would have otherwise.
I also agree that the way he wrote this book did not feel as if
he was pushing any point of view or way on you. He did a great
job offering examples from all different paths. I believe this
book was chosen for that very reason, to display what a
spiritual path could look like different from the traditional
Western way of thinking. It also had some great life lessons and
points to reflect on that tied back to the “way to live your
yoga” - in my opinion, which was the whole purpose of this YTT
journey to me!
[/quote]
Kelli,
LOL, What the heck did I just read? Yeah, I can relate to
that sentiment the first time I read the book a few years back.
Fortunately, the chapters aren't daunting. Reading the book
helped you create neural pathways for new habits and be ok with
not seeing eye to eye with what you grew up with. You're allowed
to follow the path that works for you. Dr. Goldberg really does
do a good job of offering examples, he's got a grip on being
relatable to the reader and reminding us to check-in. Thank you
for reading the book and maybe in the future, you'll pass the
lessons learned on to others.

I so loved this book and I have ready a fair amount of books
from my doctoral program, etc. and honestly I wish we had this
book then. Both personally and professionally because it so
beautifully parallels the field of psychology and the work I
engage in daily.
It fully helped me lean into the parts of psychology and
spirituality I know and love and trust the power of simplifying
a treatment approach if you will. I have always taken this
approach but now I feel like I am stepping into it that much
more confidently and the conversations I have with my clients
are reality based and real and it opens up a nice dialogue and
increases their willingness to care for themselves more
compassionately and they start healing themselves more quickly.
I believe this book was chosen for many reasons. One I think the
best recommendation is also a book that speaks to the person
recommending it. That has power in and of itself and is felt on
the receiving end. I also think that it has a fun, funny, and
very digestible way of expounding on thematic elements of
spirituality which paralleled beautifully into our YTT
curriculum. Which to me further highlights the power in the
parallel process. Thank you so much for sharing this book, Des!
I also think it was intentionally recommended because books like
these continue to speak to you in different ways at later times.
Seeds are planted and the roots and what grows will come more
with time. I can’t wait to see what little plant shows up, right
now I am manifesting a Christmas tree. 😊

Erin,
Wishing you had this book while studying for your doctoral
program is very much admired as it does draw parallels in and
out of the office, or on and off the mat. The unconventional
ways Dr. Goldberg expressed in his writing were open-ended roads
for each reader to cruise down. It's like a highway, everyone
has their own type of car, listen to their favorite music,
adjust their seats, and maybe some exit sooner or later, but
ultimately, everyone experiences that same path at some point.
Indeed seeds are planted, and it is a book we can go back to not
only for reference but reminders. Get that Christmas tree.

Closing thoughts:
I whole heartedly agree with my classmates that this book would
probably never have been something I would picked up on my own.
I liked a lot of the sentiments, thoughts, and tools it lended
us, however I often struggled with the wordiness and the
saturation of spiritual advice. I started out highlighting
things, but the realized I was basically highlighting every
other line. Lol
I think more than anything I enjoyed writing the responses, it’s
so therapeutic to journal and share. Thank you everyone for
opening up too. This has been such a beautiful tool for us all
to share deeper level of our past and present selves.

Overall, I am glad to have read this book as it was outside what
I would have normally picked up to read and I feel like it
complemented the training well. I found the travel tips at the
end of each chapter to be really valuable as it offered space to
reflect and apply the material to your own life.
I appreciate how the book offers a practical application of
spirituality to everyday life and doesn’t force any ideas or
beliefs on the reader. I think that the personal anecdotes
helped to dissolve illusions around the idea of spirituality and
demonstrated how to marry a spiritual life with a
physical/material life in a way that works for each of us. By
presenting contradicting views or opposing approaches, the
author shows how ultimately the path to spirituality is unique
to each of us, and the best path involves balance.
At times, the subject matter felt a little abstract and
surpassed my own understanding, but overall I think that the
lessons were accessible and relatable. I found myself re-reading
certain chapters if I wasn't able to digest the main theme on
the first try, and can see myself revisiting this book in the
future to see if I discover any new meaning.

Alli,
It is a unique book that offers up inconspicuous tropes of life
that we can relate to. Spirituality is not only embedded in the
chapters, but overall the book was a spiritual practice.
Something to work on as an individual but as a kula to hold
space. The responses were meant to be therapeutic for you and
your peers, so I'm so pleased to read that's what you took from
it. Enjoy finishing the book.

Similar to others, this book is probably not one that I'd ever
pick up & read on my own it if wasn't for YTT. To be completely
honest, I actually don't like reading & find it difficult to
stay the course when reading any book, hence why I'm completing
this on the last night before graduation haha! However,
Roadsigns was incredibly though provoking & it no doubt
challenged me in more ways than one! Getting through the
chapters was a lot for me at times, like others, I had to
re-read A LOT in order to comprehend what was being shared but I
gave myself grace & I'm proud of myself for sticking with it.
It's not often that I read & complete a book of any kind.
My favorite part of this book were the Travel Tips. For me, they
helped me really understand the chapters more thoroughly. And it
gave me a clearer picture of how I could relate each chapter to
my life & to my own spiritual journey. One of my biggest
takeaways from the book is that I feel like everyone is just
figuring it out & that is okay. I also think that's why you
chose this book to be a part of our YTT curriculum because
there's no one size fits all for spiritually - it's very, take
what you need, leave what you don't & that's something I really
appreciated reading through each chapter. Especially due to my
Catholic upbringing, where it was very "here's the right way,
everything else is wrong". Because of that, it's definitely
something I'd recommend to anyone who is trying to expand their
own approach or knowledge surrounding spirituality!
I really enjoy writing, so I loved how we were asked to reflect
on each of the chapters & so enjoyed reading everyones
responses. I so appreciate the vulnerability of this group & the
ability to have a safe space to share. Des, thank you for such
thoughtful, heartfelt responses to all of our entries. I know
that it must have taken a lot of time to carefully respond to
everything we shared, so thank you! xo

Madi,
Thank you for taking the time to read the chapters [a few
times over], and learn more about who you are and the acceptance
of making decisions that best fit you. You're right, take what
you need, leave what you don't. This also pertains to yoga and
what it means to you and how you weave it into your life. It
will have a major impact on your life and then at times, you
will find yourself stepping away from it, and that's ok; take
what you need.
I'm forever grateful for your time and commitment to this
assignment and proud of you for finishing the chapters!

Alli,
This book is very inconspicuous, and I'd like to call it an
underdog. It's not one you would ever expect to read because of
the spiritual path reference. People either steer clear away
from a book like this or go in with expectations and
convictions. The book really leaves it up to the reader; the
choices are yours and no one else. Therapeutic it was and
cathartic I imagine for you all to connect with subtle thoughts,
qualms, and excitement of where life will take you.

Olivia,
Practical application was the intention, and thank you for
picking up on that. It complemented the training as it reminded
you to think outside the sequencing and studio and pay attention
to who you are and what spirituality means to you. By
highlighting the contrasts between physical and spiritual, it
really does boil down to decisions and behaviors. What we
interpret and believe, then how we respond as individuals. Thank
you for reading the chapters with an analytical mindset.
