Road Signs - Chapter 18/19/20
By: yogasimplifiedmethod Date: November 20, 2022, 9:30 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 18 - Streetcar named desiree - watch your step
So many desires in our lives. We desire to be seen, heard,
accomplished, excel, prosper, abundance, love, and so on. Many
of us desire peace, calm, balance, and good health; when we push
for it, friction may arise. I know a woman who is a successful
lawyer and business owner with a high sex drive. Financially
well off, high achiever, and personifies the term "boss lady."
Unfortunately, she spends quite a bit of money on her mental and
physical well-being. Her desires have changed from success to
contentment, realizing the hard charge had begun to take a bit
of a toll. The desires for love, work-life balance, scaling back
and enjoying life become far more prominent and higher on the
list than the initial priorities for accolades and achievements.
Reflecting on the Kleshas, raga translates to desires and wants.
It is ok to have these, but to what extent and for what intent?
We will have different perspectives and different answers.
Travel tip 2: Check your motivations. Ask yourself, why do I
want this? What do I think it will bring me?
If we can be honest about why we want what we want, perhaps the
pursuit may shift in a way that makes it easier to tackle
obstacles, come up with an alternative game plan that aligns
with our intentions, allow the process to run more smoothly,
etc. What is your motivation? If it's purely for selfish
reasons, so what! Just be honest with yourself and the why.
Chapter 19 - Detour: men and women at work
The story is about Jason and Stephanie, two very different
people with different perspectives about work/life/financial
stability. What brought them together was a calling at the right
time to complement each other's ideas and passions.
Hinduism/Buddhism is also referenced, discussing dharma,
performing work, and not harming others. If one were to visit an
ashram, oftentimes Seva yoga requires volunteering time to
build, clean, or assist as a devotional practice. What some may
find meaningless and unfulfilling actually is meaningful and
fulfilling if done with spirit.
Travel Tips: Choose one that resonates with you and discuss an
experience. For instance, I choose "find your dharma." Teaching
yoga may be my dharma or not. Fortunately, yoga is not only
something I indeed enjoy teaching; it all begins with healing
and personal therapy. Continuing on with it was something that
came to fruition, and putting in the time to learn more was
something I naturally was drawn to. Who knows, down the road,
something else may come along and pique my interest, revealing a
true passion that may completely morph into something I never
imagined. Which statement resonates with you?
Chapter 20: Form one lane through the eye of the needle
Money makes the world go around. Let's just be real about it.
Some people use the money for greed; some want it for safety, to
enjoy life more, to have comfort, and to acquire nice things; we
all have our reasons. What sets this chapter aside from the
others is Dr. Goldberg's breakdown of people in his life who
have given things up for spiritual austerities and the opposite
demonstrating a luxurious lifestyle, knowing it may disappear;
the practice of Aparigraha is "non-attachment." We're driven to
build, collect, grow, and acquire. If not, humanity would not
have advanced as fast as it has. Civilizations, culture, and
traditions would not be what it is if there wasn't a gain,
finances, heirlooms, and artifacts included.
Travel Tip 1: What do the following terms mean to you?
Prosperity
Abundance
Wealth
Poverty
Simplicity
Rich in Spirit

Chapter 18
100-club status was a huge motivation for me (and now it’s
200-class club)! I wanted to achieve it because I saw it as a
stamp of success and it’s nice to be recognized for hard work!
It brought a sense of accomplishment and selfish pride. It’s fun
for me to make weekly plans and make the commitment!
And I currently really want a new computer because it takes 15
minutes to open zoom-black Friday deals are welcome.
Chapter 19
I really enjoyed this chapter, in chapter 17 I reflecting
heavily on my unfulfilling job. “If the routines of the workaday
world do not provide ready opportunities to glimpse the
transcendent or plug into the sacred rhythms of existence, we
have to create our own openings while also living up to our
responsibilities.”
Travel Tip 4 Examine your assumptions:
I am definitely judging my present situation too harshly. There
is plenty of positives with my job! I have had the capability to
take Fridays off of work on PTO for YTT immersive weekends.
Today has been a quiet day at work and I am focusing on my
reading assignments. My job requires me to sit in front of a
computer all day, but I work remote and get to hang with my dog
all day. I am lucky to have a work-life balance.
Chapter 20
Travel Tip 1: What do the following terms mean to you?
Prosperity- to succeed and flourish
Abundance-To have a lot of something, sometimes too much
Wealth- Having money, or enough of something
Poverty-living “below” the average
Simplicity- minimal and joyous
Rich in Spirit- connected to oneself, full of life, happy

Ch 18 it’s funny I thought a little about the question and in
honesty didn’t know what to write about and then later that
night I was telling my husband I hit my goal already for the
year with my “money goals” he just smiled and chuckled and said
that’s great so proud of you but why are so into this goal every
year and it brought me back to this chapter. Growing up we
didn’t have much money and my Parents (amazing people) just
didn’t know how to manage money well and a lot of there
arguments with each other were over money and I told myself once
I started to work and make my own money I would be responsible
with it. Totally for selfish reasons I set goals for myself to
save a certain amount, invest a certain amount and have a
vacation account. It definitely makes me feel good and it’s
been fun to read and learn about managing your money over the
years.
Chapter 19 I would definitely have to say question 3: turn it
into a calling. I feel like my career has been my calling. I am
forever grateful to wake up everyday going to a job I love. I
know right now I’m eager for a little change but I still love
what I do. I am so fortunate to have met so many incredible
people , who trust in me to make them look beautiful but also
make them feel special. I love making people feel good! I love
how connected I feel with my clients many I have been with them
thru marriage, divorce, deaths, births and illnesses. Listening
and guiding them helping them to me is priceless. They say
people come into your life for a reason , a season or a lifetime
and it really sums up so much within my career. I think that’s
why I’m so drawn to YTT and the collective studio there’s just
an amazing energy and welcoming feeling…. Feels like home.
Chapter 20
Prosperity: living a good life:happiness
Abundance: the appreciation of living life to the fullest
Wealth:feeling full of what you have
Poverty:living without a purpose
Simplicity:the simple things in life
Rich in spirit:how we live our life

Roadsigns Ch.18/19/20
Chapter 18 - Streetcar Named Desire - Watch your
Step
Travel Tip #2: Check your motivations. Ask yourself,
why do I want this? What do I think it will bring
me?
I think that in the past, and maybe the very recent
past, I have been motivated by what people think of me. I would
put a lot of value into whether people thought I was successful
enough, smart enough, worked hard enough, etc. and let that
drive me to pursue desires more than I would like to admit. If I
accomplished particular achievements or accolades, I felt like I
was proving my worth.
Over the past two years, I would like to think that
my mindset has changed and that I am motivated by happiness. I
try to gauge my decisions, commitments and goals based on
whether I think they will add happiness to my life. I am so
fortunate to say that my family makes me happy, my work makes me
happy, my friends and coworkers make me happy, and my
hobbies/interests make me happy. If satisfying a desire makes me
feel stressed, worried or anxious, then to me it is something
that does not bring me happiness and is not worth
pursuing.
Chapter 19 - Detour: men and women at work
Travel Tip #6: Find your Balance
Balance has been something I have been striving for
over the past year. While I am so grateful to work for, be a
part of, and complete YTT at Collective, I think that I am in a
unique situation in that it is not just the place I go for
community and to workout, and to complete YTT, but also my place
of work. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish my time at the
studio as an employee vs. as a member or guest. I try to
separate my mindset depending on the reason I am at the studio
and approach the immersion weekends with sole focus on YTT, but
it is hard to ignore the pending tasks, questions people ask as
I am there, and other factors that come into play as I enter the
space with the knowledge I have in my position as a studio
coordinator.
Chapter 20: Form one lane through the eye of the
needle
Travel Tip #1: What do the following terms mean to
you?
Prosperity - continued success
Abundance - to have more than what is needed
Wealth - possession of money
Poverty - surviving with few material items and
little money
Simplicity - contentment; detachment from greater
interests/qualities/desires
Rich in Spirit - internalization of spiritual
ideals, pursuing a spiritual life

Chapter 18; Practice gratitude: This travel tip spoke to me
because it is constantly something that I am reminding myself.
Being grateful for what we already have to feel content and
happy is so important. It’s so easy to just want more. I feel
like I get caught up in wanting more, not necessarily
materialistic things, but it could be experiences or a new job
even and I get hung up on wanting that new job and forgetting to
appreciate the job I have. I may not love it, but it did give me
useful skills that can never be taken away. Forgetting to be
grateful for what you already have can definitely cause
discontentment or unhappiness for me, until I slow it down and
remind myself that I have things really good in comparison to
some people.
Chapter 19; Evaluate your attitude: My current job is not
conducive to my spiritual needs at all, I feel like it is
unfulfilling and it makes me feel stuck between work and my
commute for far longer than I can accept it and still think the
money and benefits are worth it. I find that when my boss puts
me by myself, I can do things to mitigate the unhappiness and
boredom by listening to podcasts or music, but when I’m stuck
working with someone who constantly needs small talk to make
them feel entertained, I can’t stop thinking about how much I
can’t stand being there. I always try to maintain a positive
attitude but being there is a constant test to that and the only
answer I can come up with is to find a new job that allows for
more freedom, which is in the works.
Chapter 20; Travel tip #1:
Prosperity- to be successful and thrive.
Abundance- To have a lot of something
Wealth- Financial freedom, good health and family
Poverty- poor, learning to be resourceful with what you have
Simplicity- basic, minimalist
Rich in Spirit- To feel fulfilled, happy in life.

Chapter 18
Travel Tip #3
Go deeper. I like this tip because it is true that most desires
are rooted in deeper yearning and it could be for happiness,
peace, love, fulfillment. I am going to start trying to ask
myself How will getting what I want make me feel? Going deep and
thinking about what my desire is trying to tell me may help me
from acting impulsively on desires and it will remind me of what
my real goal is.
Chapter 19
Travel tip #3
Turn it into a calling. I am choosing this tip because I really
want to find a career that is fulfilling and my calling. I am a
recent college graduate and have been constantly thinking about
what I want my work to be and how I can have a sense of purpose.
I believe my calling is helping others and one day I would like
to be able to help others in their journey with grief and more
specifically with suicide. I feel like YTT is the first step to
me finding my calling. It has taught me so much about holding
space for others. The most important thing to keep in mind is to
find work that is performed with integrity and a sense of
purpose.
Chapter 20
Travel Tip #1
Prosperity - successful and thriving
Abundance - to have more than what is needed
Wealth - financial gain, stability
Poverty - insufficient money, poor
Simplicity - easy to understand, minimalistic
Rich in Spirit - peaceful, grounded, giving, fulfilled

Congrats on the 100-club status! Pride, accomplishment, and
commitment! That is something to celebrate, and I laughed at the
black Friday deals are welcome bit. lol Reflecting on your job
and looking at it positively changes your mindset. Taking PTO
and hanging with your dog all day is rewarding, to say the
least. You have a good setup going on.
Great job answering the terms!

Having parents argue over money is definitely traumatic because
it leaves such an imprint in our brains of what to do, what not
to do, etc. It's fear-based and that fear is channeled into a
proactive mindset of money management. It's done well for you
and having your husband check you a bit is so loving, he
appreciates your tenacity and responsibility, but questions you
with love. Having that person ask is helpful for
self-reflection, and good job handling money as well as you do.
Your parent's experiences helped shape yours.
Your job is rewarding it's almost like therapy for your clients.
They share so many milestones with you as well as grief, they
allow you into their lives that go beyond your talent, it's your
loving and caring energy. Something you feel at the Collective
Studios. :-)
Great responses on the terms! I like how we live our life! So
true.

So attuned to yourself, Olivia! Being the only girl in a clan
full of brothers may add extra weight to proving yourself and
being seen in the way you are. You're doing an amazing job with
everything you're learning now and are surrounded by elements
that bring you happiness.
It's such a juxtaposition of being studio coordinator and
student to separate your intentions and obligations. I hope you
remind yourself that you're doing great and doing the best you
can in the position that you're in. Don't worry. It will be over
soon (YTT)! :-)
Great answers to the terms!

It is easy to want more; amen to that! When we reach the
pinnacle of what we want, the next question is, "is it truly
enough?" Recognizing the skills you acquired with your
occupation is a great mindset because people often don't reflect
on them. Good for you for checking yourself!
I am not going to lie, I laughed at your response about working
alone versus working with someone else. That was entertaining to
read because I can visualize the looks on your face. Having said
that, it's a test of patience and maybe even a spiritual
practice to be in an environment you would rather not be in. I
can relate, and sometimes I ask myself, "What is my lesson or
karma in this?" Definitely tough, but you're on the path to
changing it up!
Fabulous answers to the terms, particularly poverty and wealth.
Having spent time in third world countries, seeing firsthand
poverty and being creative with resources to get by.
Additionally, with wealth, I've witnessed what we would consider
poor villages and families, but they are happy to be a family
and eat off the land's resources.
