The West wants Putin to resign and the Russian elites want
exactly the same thing: there is a consensus on this. Only there
is one small problem: Putin is not going to resign. Furthermore,
if he finally resigns – in whatever form he takes – it will not
be the end of the movie, as the Western and Russian elites hope,
but it will be the beginning of a much deeper crisis. With this

out within Russia for power and
       influence.
Real change means turning Russia into a democratic society, no
longer dominated by the interests of foreign capital – and
Russian investment abroad, which is an important issue for
Russian elites when making decisions. Russian society wants a
different economic development and people understand that this
is necessary. This goes completely against the perspective
envisioned by the elites of Russia and the West.

In a sense, we are facing a situation very similar to that of
Russia in 1916-1917, when it was clear that the British and
Germans were fed up with the Tsar. This created a very strange
situation, because the Germans and the British were at war with
each other, but they agreed that Nicholas II had to go. The
Germans wanted this because they hoped Russia would negotiate
its way out of the war. The British hoped that a new regime
would continue the war more effectively. As you may remember,
Nicholas IIHe resigned and started a revolution, something that
was not contemplated in the plans of the Germans or the British.
I think the current situation is very similar: they want Putin
gone, but they want the regime to remain largely intact,
although perhaps there may be some regression in the level of
authoritarianism to what existed before 2020. Essentially, a "
"back to normal" without Putin and without the most extreme
       repression or militarization.
