Outside Reading
Pitch Perfect
I read the review for “Pitch Perfect” by Laura Beck. The author
of this review uses the magnificent seven very well in this
review. The author uses ideas very well to describe and get the
main point across in the review. The author says that the movie
is a funny, nerdy, and cute movie to see. The organization of
the article is very good. The article goes in order through the
paragraphs and has transitions that go to other topics. The
article has its main points that show what each character is and
how they make the movie funnier and how they contribute to the
movie. The author talks about each character and will transition
into another part of the movie or character in the movie
flawlessly. The voice of the article has a positive tone and a
funny voice. The voice is also strong and it helps make the
article easier and more fun to read. The word choice that author
of the article used is very strong. The strong word choice such
as: hilarious, spitfire, neurotic, and induced make the article
more interesting to read and more fun to read. The word choice
helps with imagery and the word choice makes it easier to
picture the details and what is happening in the movie. The word
choice varies from small words to big, and strong vocabulary.
The sentences length and structure change throughout the
article. The sentence fluency and the rhythm and flowing of the
sentences are very good in this review sentences rhyme and have
a catchy tone to them. There is a happy flow to the review which
makes it more persuasive sounding to seeing this movie that is
being reviewed. The conventions used in the movie review are
good. There are no errors in punctuation or grammar in this
review. There are no problems reading through the article review
with grammar or words that are out of place or in the wrong
order. The presentation of the writing is very neat and clean.
The appearance is easy to understand because the article title
and author is easy to see. Also the characters and actresses are
easy to see in the review. Their names are highlighted. The
punctuation is clear and it shows the excitement in the author’s
voice about this movie. Overall this review states how the movie
“Pitch Perfect” is a good, entertaining, and funny movie to see.

The article I wrote about talks about Madagascar 3 and it is
written by Michael O’Sullivan of the Washington post. O’Sullivan
allows her main idea to stay as the movie while also throwing in
other names, like Fantasia, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, to show
comparison. She centers the base of each of her paragraphs with
an example from the movie and how this is good and it makes the
movie better. Each paragraph has a positive feeling and gives a
positive background for the film to whoever is reading the
article.
As far as organization in the review goes, out of all the events
in the movies mentioned, they are all in chronological order.
O’Sullivan gives us a basic plot summary of an event and then
expands upon a certain idea and tries to show its good points as
well. Every character in the movie is followed by their actor
and any references to movies are easy to spot because the movies
are in quotes. The one time that the writer Noah Baumbach is
mentioned, his other work is referenced.
The voice of the review is very positive and it is showing that
the author enjoyed the film. Most instances use a positive word
as feed back: “her character then engages in a slo-mo series of
“Matrix”-style, bullet-time banana-dodging is absolutely
sublime,” best use of 3-D animation we’ve seen since ‘Up,’”
“eye-popping neon, that rival those of Disney’s 1940 classic
‘Fantasia,’” “actually kind of . . . sweet,” and “a kid’s Cirque
de Soleil.” From each of these fragments, it can be seen that
the author is trying to make the movie amazing, and possibly
even over-play it. Up won the Oscar for being the best Animated
Feature Film of the year. Saying the animation is the best since
may be a little bit of a hyperbole. Comparing the movie to
Cirque de Soleil may also be a little larger than life because
the Cirque de Soleil is a superlative, famous circus group. The
author was implying, with the use of the circus in the movie,
that it would be an amazing time equal to the super famous
circus.
Each sentence smoothly becomes the next and each also makes
perfect sense. The author does a good job of not allowing the
reader to get lost and guiding him through the review. The
language is also easy to understand and is simple with a few
instances of higher-diction descriptive words.
The story is grammatically correct while the spelling,
punctuation and capitalization is also correct. The paragraphing
is a correct and all but two paragraphs are longer than one or
two sentences.
The presentation of this review is very dull. There is a small
picture of the Madagascar 3 cover on the left of the article
with an option to watch the preview but after that there are no
visual aids. The article is mostly white and there isn’t much
more than the words. Unlike other articles I have read this
article used grey font instead of black font. Even the article
is very white the Washington Post did a good job of reducing the
grey and the white by making their unrelated adds different
colors: blue for the font and pictures outside of the article’s
box.

House Party 1
The movie review I read was for one on my favorite 90's movie,
House Party. It stars the rap duo Kid n' Play, comedians Robin
Harris, and Martin Lawrence, and actresses Tisha Campbell and
Adrienne-Joi Johnson. In the review, Hal Hinson of the
Washington Post explains how the director, Reginald Hudlin puts
comedy, teenage love, partying, diceplin, life as a teenager,
together. The movie starts off with Kid (Christopher Reid) at
lunch at school with his friends Play (Christopher Martin) and
Bilal (Martin Lawrence). Play is talking about a house party he
is throwing that night at his house, which is also a school
night. Kid is full force with the party and plans to go until
trouble strucks in. Because of a fight he was included in at
school, his father punishes him for the night and can't go to
the party. But that doesn't stop him from going to his friends
party. Kid sneaks out and runs into a little trouble on his way
to the party. The kids he got into a fight with at school, see
him walking to the party and think they have another chance to
beat Kid up. While these people chase Kid all around town, they
have a little run in with the police. They don't get arrested
but they do get a warning and Kid makes it to the party. When he
gets to Play's house, the place is packed with teens from their
school; they are all having a great time dancing mingling. Kid
and Play spot two girls they want to get with, Sharane and
Sidney. Sharane is what they call a ''project chick'' and Sidney
is what they called a ''nice girl''. When Kid walks the girls
home, at first he is interested in Sharane and she isn't
intersted in him; she likes Play. But when Kid walked Sidney
home, at first she doesn't like him but then when they got to
her house, they both realized how much they like each other. Hal
Hinson explained how the director got the story line from his
high school years. He also said that it is high energenic and
one of a kind like Kid's ''eraser head'' hair. Hinson also used
a quote from the movie when Kid got grounded and his dad says
"every little step you take tonight's gonna be right here in
this bedroom." In Hinson's opinion, House Party isn't a great
movie but it is 'heartfelt and enormously winning. In this
review, Hinson did use different sentence structure and added
quotes too. the word choices he used related good with the movie
and he always stayed on topic. It was organized very well by
introducing the movie and what he thought of it and talking
about the director too ; then he goes on and talks about the
movie and what's its about and who's in it and what happens in
it. The author sounds kind of enthuciastc writing this review,
as if he really liked the movie.
