During the debate that I watched on Wednesday, both groups
effectively spoke and used pathos, logos, and ethos to convince
me on what they believed. There were sometimes when I totally
disagreed with how they justified their arguments but the
strategies that were used by each party allowed me to decide.
For each question the moderator asked, both sides argued their
point of view. They both provided numerous statistics so the
audience could get more of a sense of how important the topic is
and how it has affected the country. When each side was debating
their point, they were strong and got their point across to the
audience quickly so it would make it easier for them to choose
their side in the end. When a question was given to one of the
groups, they answered the question in the last thirty seconds
they were given. First they would bring up some other point that
related to the question but they only somewhat answered the
question in the last thirty seconds. Some questions asked about
their beliefs on a topic or person. They would respond by
first bring up statistics that would shine some light on the
positive role that it plays in our society or if they disagreed,
they would persuade the audience that it was harmful to our
society, and it will affect us if we kept it up. Both sides were
very good at persuading me towards a topic and their beliefs on
it. In the beginning of the debate, each side looked at the
audience or the moderator when they were given a question later
they would look at the other group. I believe that his was a
mistake. The groups were trying to convince us, the audience,
that their beliefs were better but instead they were staring at
the opposing side and talked to them about it. Each side had
already made up their minds and there would be no changing that
so by looking at the other side made the persuasion less
effective. Each groups word choice was professional yet
understandable. This also made the debate more effective. When
the moderator gave the questions, some of the time the groups
read off a paper. This
I believe made the debate less effective for me because they
already had planned each word that they were going to say. When
the groups were going off what the opposing group said, they
usually spoke what they were thinking instead of having
everything planned out. Overall each side of the debate was
effective at getting their point across. Some of the ideas and
strategies that I could use in my future writing is showing the
reader how the main idea or topic has affected people in the
world and how it could be changed instead of plainly stating
what I believe is affecting people and how it could possibly be
changed. Besides this I could write like I am speaking directly
to someone or towards a group of people instead of talking to a
wall.
