DIR By: MrLyon
Date: September 10, 2012, 7:58 am
---------------------------------------------------------
You have been working on your own personal narratives that are
centered around the concept of place. In order to successfully
write this paper, it's important to develop a habit of making
your words and sentences matter to the purpose of your piece.
For this homework assignment, please post a reply to the
following prompt:
Write down three individual words and one full sentence from
your own personal narrative. For each word, explain (providing
context from your story itself when necessary) why you selected
this particular word and how this word helps to advance the
purpose/meaning/tone of your narrative. For the sentence,
explain how the STRUCTURE of your sentence helps to convey the
meaning/purpose/tone behind your work.

My three words: Summer, Grandma, Memorable.
There are so many memorable things that we do when we are at the
Cape.
I chose the word summer because this place is where we go on
vacation. We always go during the season of summer.
I chose the word Grandma because it is her summer home. She is
an important family member to us, and she lets us go there all
the time.
I chose the word memorable for many reasons. The top reason is
that we have so many memories of going to the cape, and always
create more every time we visit.

1. desire
-I selected this word because it gives a central idea how i feel
when i perform. the desire to please the crowd and my dance
teacher. the tone shows the reader that this isn't something
similar to a game to me. this is my life.
"That desire to jump on stage when the beat drops is now and
will forever be a natural habit." the structure of my sentence
doesn't tell the reader what exactly the subject is. i simply
provided hints.
2. Ambition
-ambition was choosen becasue that is our motto. ambition is the
key especially when it comes to a sport. all the hard work and
training i did for 13 years wasn't for nothing.
"As the ambitious sweat trickled down my face, the competition
is about to call the winner." The structurre gives a use of
imagery and uses the sweat as a metaphor.
3. Challenge
-no matter wehre you go thre's always goingt to be a challenge.
but when it comes to dance, the word challenge can be used in
many different circumstances. that is what makes this word so
unique.
"Because recital was coming up, the struggle to complete the
flip still haunted me. I was then challenged to create the
proper mind set to learn it." In the structure of this sentence,
the challenge wasn't to get the step in this case. The challenge
is to set that goal to get it by recital.

My three words dumbfounded, millions, greatest.
Dumbfounded- I chose this word because it means to be amazed and
speechless. Which 100% describes how I was feeling at the time.
Millions- I chose the word millions because my sentence says .
"I started shaking, and millions questions raced into my head."
I used the word millions to make the appearance and feeling of
anxiousness and nervousness.
Greatest- I used the word greatest to express and overexagerate
a bit at how great of a summer I would have.
My sentence: I was still kind of shaking, but so antsy. That I
was finally at camp the place where my cousin made her most
memorable friends and memories and had a great summer every
summer. This sentence shows how excited I was and how nervous I
was at the same time. This also foreshadows the outcome of my
summer and how camp would go.

My 3 words: realized, disturbing, and understand.
realized: The reason I chose this word is because I feel like it
is a key word in showing that I know what is going on and that
I'm not oblivious. Its also a point in understanding more about
the subject.
disturbing: This word conveys how I felt about what I saw and
heard about. Its a strong word and easy to understand my
feelings through that word.
understand: I chose this word because it has a strong effect to
me in the subject. Me undertanding my subject is very important
and is a good thing that I actually do.
My sentence is: I had then realized what had happened.
This sentence is almost like a climax. It is when I know what
has been going on around me. Even though it is a simple
sentence, it has a good meaning to it. It could also be a point
where the reader would realize what had happened.

The three words I chose were different, changed and shock.
Different- I chose the word "different" because in my story
there was a huge gap between what I was used to and what the
people there were used to. My perspective was now different and
it made me look at life in Israel, differently.
Changed- I used this word because it described how I felt.
Looking at how people lived and what they did to make money in
the certain parts I visited made me change and realize that they
struggle every day to feed themselves and that there are even
worse parts in the world. To me, I changed and became a new
person who saw the struggles of hard workers.
Shock- This word illustrates more clearly how I felt when I
first landed in Israel. Where ever you walk, you would see a
soldier with a standard issue assault rifle. In the U.S we don't
usually see that unless your at a army base or near the White
house. I was not used to being escorted with a soldier to go to
my hotel or where ever I went. I could have looked in the
thesaurus and picked out thousands of words that expressed how I
was feeling when I first landed in Israel.

Grandma- My whole personal narrative is based off of my time
spent at her house when I was younger
Reminisce- Throughout my narrative all I do is reminisce on the
good times I had at my grandmas house.
Love- I used this word often in my narrative because it's how I
felt a lot of the times at my grandma. I loved her house, dog,
cat, food, games. I always had so much fun and love the memories
I have from when I was younger.
"I was in the best mood when my grandma was cooking, she cooked
briscit like no one else could"
In this sentence and the sentence that follows I use emotion and
smell to try and help the reader understand or even relate to
what I'm saying.

I chose the words judge, normal, and forever.
I chose the word judge because I realized that it isn't fair to
judge people based on something that they can not fix.
I chose the word normal because not everybody is normal and I
realized that with my cousin.
I also chose the word forever because once I learned why my
cousin was different I knew that it would change the way I
thought of people like her forever and how I would treat her
forever.
" I have also learned not to judge people in general because
they might not be able to change what is wrong with them." The
structure of my sentence show how this day has changed the way I
view people forever and how I learned not to judge people
because they are different.

My three words eat, homework, and punishment
“When I entered the house, I saw the rusty orange, white and
black island that I spent so much time at in the past.”
I chose eat because what I learn while eating help’s to support
the purpose. Through learning while I eat I am able to keep
manners while eating forever.
I chose homework because in the story whenever my parents make
me do homework they try to teach me work ethic. Now today, I
have better work ethic than whenever I worked, in middle school
or high school.
I chose punishment because, they taught me morals, and which
morals to hold dear and which to ignore. I grow up today and my
morals are strong, supported by my views, and I am called a
gentleman among my friends.
The sentence I chose supports the structure of my story because
it is the transition from modern day to a flashback. It starts
to lead into giving the purpose of the story and sets the tone
of reminiscing on good memories, a little of a feel good tone.

1. "Sentimental" This word is describing my uncle's house in
Cape Cod. I chose this word because of the great memories that
I have of the house and my emotional attachment to it.
2. "Scenery" I chose this word because I think the scenery of
Cape Cod is beautiful. I love the way the ocean meets the
horizon.
3. "Vacation" I chose this word because this is a story about
a vacation house and this word brings up the feeling of having
no worries.
"Despite this depressing scenery I spent some of the best days
of my life at this house." This quote shows a contradiction
between the ugly appearance of the house and my feelings about
it.
