In the personal narrative I read about bullying the author talks
about a kid with Asperger syndrome who is being bullied for
being different. Her lack of social skills makes it difficult
for her to understand why her classmates are being so mean to
her. The author is automatically channeling the sympathy within
the reader. When reading the narrative you feel bad from the
start. The author begins the narrative talking about little
things like being laughed at and little petty things. But as the
narrative progresses the bullying gets worse. It turns from
verbal bullying to physical bullying. This girl who is being
bullied at first puts the blame on herself and thinks maybe if
she just laughs with them, they will be nicer. Then she starts
to realize these kids like to see her in pain. The word choice
is interesting because it’s being spoken in second person. The
author is putting you in this girl’s place. Making you feel her
pain. The authors’ purpose was to make you feel how this girl
felt. To know what it’s like to be bullied. “Imagine that it’s
like this every single day. Imagine that you start dreaming of
ways to commit suicide. Imagine that this goes on for more than
a year; more than two; more than three. Imagine that every day
of your teenage life is like this. What would you do?” the
author wants you to think of how you would handle this? It also
gets you to think who else deals with this? Have you ever made
someone feel like this? The author definitely gets their point
across when using second person instead of first. If this story
was done in first person you would only feel empathy. Since this
story is done in second you feel more sympathy because you’re
actually being placed in this girl’s situation.

The personal narritive I read was Amen! by Christine Heim. The
maid idea of the piece was to not be afraid to try something
new. She has a change in emotions as the story went on. At the
beginning her "heart was racing." But as she figured out what to
present she got more and more excited. Once it beacme her turn
to present she became nervous again. She realized that she
should'nt have been nervous at all and her and her other
classmates were happy with her presentation.
The authors verb use caused me to make a realization of what the
author was feeling. "My heart was racing." "My breat was rapid."
By reading those two quotes you can realize that the author was
nervous. The change of tone kept the reader interested of the
outcome of the presentation and how others will react to it. The
usage of a simile compared an apocalypse to going to church
often. Also the black robe symbolized the confidence to try
something new. The use of talking about her emotions and using
verbs often caused the story to flow smoothly. The sentances
were around the same length and the usage of commas was key. By
going from past to present at the end of the story proves to the
author that she can try anything and not be nervous about it.
