The article I read about talked about saving wildlife from
trafficking on the CNN Opinion Page. In this article the author,
Carter Roberts, is immediately identified as the president and
CEO of World Wildlife Fund. This helps establish some ethos from
the beginning because its shows he is a man very dedicated and
caring for the cause. He starts off by humanizing the article
and making people feel a sort of brotherly/sisterly moral
objective to help the animals. He calls the animal trafficking
the next biggest criminal enterprise after drug wars, the
counterfeiting industry and human trafficking. Drug wars are
frown upon by most of the audience that would read this article
and since Roberts is relating the drug war to animal trafficking
he is able to link the two in a way where people would want to
help because, even though they may not be able to do as much as
they want for drug wars – or the other two industries,
especially human trafficking – they are able to help more. This
stabilizes a sense of pathos between the reader and the subject.
By then connecting the article with big criminal fighting
groups, such as INTERPOL, and showing how harmful the selling of
animals can be (by funding militias and criminal organizations)
       to the safety of others.
The ideas of the article were always on topic going from the
problem, down to why it is harmful and what should and will be
done about it. The article is easy to follow and read, nothing
is too complicated and all the words can be understood. There is
       a good sense of logos.
The organization, as mentioned before is very step-by-step with
every sub-topic leading to another sub-topic. There is never a
point in the article where the reader is lost or confused.
The voice of the author is favoring the protection of wildlife.
He also seems sad and concerned about countries starting to lose
       control of the poachers.
The word choice is very precise and to the point. There aren’t
many descriptive words and the author tried very hard to make
himself sound intelligent but understandable and not
condescending: he is able to do this successfully.
The sentence fluidity is very good. Each sentence leads to the
next and there are no abrupt changes and all the paragraph
transitions are logical and don’t leave the reader confused. The
pronouns are only used in the first paragraph, addressing the
reader and in the last two only twice, because the paragraphs
       were the author’s personal opinion.
The conventions of the article are fine. The author used
personal pronouns very sparingly. There are contractions used
       though.
The presentation is done well. When CNN has another article that
can be connected, it is there highlighted in blue, giving the
reader an option to go learn more about the topic. The page has
a video at the beginning of the article with a picture of one of
the poached animals, the rhino, but it is also the only one that
Roberts talked about in a specific case. The video explains the
measures being taken to save the animals and brings sound and
       moving picture into the article.

In the New York times, I read an editorial called Chafin vs.
Chafin. This article is about weather or not a parent should
have custoty of their child if their are living outside the
country and is an american citizen. An American sergeant Jeffery
Lee Chafin married a British citizen name Lynne Hales Chafin in
2006. They had a baby named E.C. a year after and when sergeant
Jeffery was serving in Afghanistan, Lynne took their child to
live in Scotland. When he was done fighting in Afghanistan, his
whole family moved to Alabama, where he was stationed at.
However, in 2010 Jeffery filed for divorce and had temporary
custody of their daughter because his wife was deported back to
Scotland. In a short amount of time, his wife did file for
custody for their daughter, which would require her to move to
Scotland. Which brings the question : Can you really file for
custody while you are living in another country? I guess you can
because E.C. now live with her mother in Scotland. This issue
was brought to the Supreme Court. ''The Supreme Court should
support the principle that any losing parent has a right to
appeal.'' This quote shows that the mother had a right to fight
for custody of her daughter no matter where she is. The writer
explores both sides of the story from where the mother and the
father is coming from with their concerns and ideas about the
situation. He also gives a firm back round of the situation too
by saying ''Sgt. First Class Jeffrey Lee Chafin, an American,
married Lynne Hales Chafin, a British citizen, in Scotland in
2006. Their daughter, E.C., was born the next year in Germany,
where he was stationed.'' This also gives a good back round of
who the editorial was going to be about. This piece of writing
is very organized by starting with a paragraph about
international custody. Then it goes in to who this article is
going to be about and who was involded in it besides the family
. After it goes to the outcome of the situation too. The voice
of this article is concerned and the word choice was really well
       too.

The article that I read has to do with a piano being left on the
side of the curb in NYC. While the author of this article was
thinking on what to do for a new movie, he heard a piano, and it
was this piano on the curb that he heard. It’s truly remarkable
that people would actually stop in the middle of their day to
play a piano that’s just sitting there outside. The author had
said that this was happening all day; people would come and go
as they pleased playing the piano. Some even had the thought
that they would want to take it, but they didn’t know if they
could or not. To all of the people, this was just a piano on the
curb, but to the author of the article, it was his next movie.
He took many pictures of this throughout the day, and by the end
of the day, he had a story. This is an amazing thing to have
happen. It shows how people can take the time to enjoy
themselves, and while someone is playing that piano, others can
be walking by and appreciating their music. However, the piano
isn’t allowed to stay out there. It would make things much
better if there wasn’t the fine to leaving it out there and it
could just stay there for as long as possible for people to go
       and play whenever they please.
