A young and lean brown she-wolf limped onto the cold territory,
cautiously sniffing air for the wolves who rightfully claim the
land she stood on. She wasn't planning on staying for long
though. The mother bit her lip, glancing down at the three
little bundles waddling over the snow with curiosity and fear. A
black and gray male, with blazing orange eyes, echoed a play
growl before pouncing onto a small pile of snowflakes, then
easily sinking down into its cold fluff. A brown one, like his
mother but darker, attempted to copy his favorite sibling and
idol. Then, a whitish gray female strutted up to the pile after
slipping around her mother's legs. "Idiots..." she murmured, her
childish voice deceiving they way she tried to talk like an
       adult.
But the adult wolf didn't seem to care, or notice, and simply
continued to check for scents of nearby wolves. "Hey Mum! Mum!"
The darker gray pup yipped, hopping his way out of the pile of
snow and over to his mother. "Are you lookin' for food? I'm
starvinnnn'!" he whined, wagging his tail eagerly. The shaded
brown male followed after his brother, bouncing excitedly. "Me
       too, Mummy," he squeaked.
She glared down at her pups, more anxious and angry. "No, quiet
down. Follow me, hurry," she ordered, quickly heading across a
path lightly covered in snow. The children nodded and bounded
after her just to keep up with her swift steps. "Go in there,"
she barked, nervously glancing behind her to check if any
strangers followed. "You comin' in, Mum?" the noisy male asked
after he and his two siblings snuggled up inside the den. The
female hesitated, but popped her head in, covered in stained and
ragged fur. Her pups didn't look much different than her,
grooming wise. "It's time for bed," she told them, softer than
her fierce tone before. "Sing us a song, Mummy!" the youngest,
the brown wolf pup, begged hopefully. "Yeah, that lullabee you
sing!" the oldest added, whipping his black tail with silvery
fringed edges back and forth. In this pup's case, lullabee was
actually lullaby, because of course, kids always make up their
own words, don't they? She sighed, but slowly began to hum a
serene tune, after a while, silent words were added.
       "Just close your eyes
       The sun is going down
       You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
       Come morning light
       You and I'll be safe...and...sound,"
As the youthful mother sang, her offspring seemed to immediately
fall asleep to the music, hidden from the outside by the howling
wind. Still humming softly, she stood up and began to back out
of the den, looking behind herself and at her paws. When the
snow was able to reach her face, she stared down at the puppies
with a shameful and saddened gaze. "Goodnight-" she was cut
herself off as tears struck down her rough cheeks and she
cleared her throat. "Goodnight, my pups," she whispered quickly
before turning and rushing away, and silent sob pouring for her
mouth as she ran off into the distance and out of the snowy
       world.
So there they were, resting so peacefully and contentedly
without one bit of worry. And without knowing they were
       abandoned.
