General DD topics

Submarines and DDs are very similar because they have mainly
torps and nothing else. There are some (2?) DDs that have also
secondaries but those are so weak and irrelevant and probably on
the stuck hull. Main damage comes from torpedos for both Subs
and DDs. A very few rare DDs have no torpedos but only guns
(Druid, Ragnar ?) and even those DDs with very few torpedos in
salvo (2-5) do more damage with those few torpedos than with
guns. Therefore the main topic is to talk about torpedos. But
for DDs there are also some other topics like smoke,
radar/hydro, torpedo reloader, HP healer. Both ship classes can
learn how to spread torps. For example both for subs and DDs
very efficient is to send 1st wide spread topedo/salvo out and
then make a 5 seconds pause and then follow with all remaining
torpedos/salvos. The first tprpedo/wave make the enemy decrese
the speed usually and then the next torpedos/waves will hit very
surely the slow ship. So, many topics are common for Subs and
DDs and most who like DDs also love subs. There are other ships
that have torpedos and DD/SC players should like those ships
too. I for example like DDs, Subs, CVs because all have torpedos
and scouting feature, but i don't like other ship types unless
they have good torps and better scouting features
(manuverability+concealment). For example playing a cruiser with
fast swimming 12km range mighty torps is not so bad sometimes
but every game with Subs/DDs is obviously a more jyoable
experience.
The main feature for DDs are scouting. That feature is possible
if a ship has good or very good manuverability and good or very
good concealment. Ships that can't scout:
1. French DDs, most russian DDs (except Grozovoi) because they
have so bad concealment and will be msot times spotted first.
2. Elbing because bad manuverability. Harugumo is debatable
about the manuverability, in general it can but not so well.
Maybe some other ships can't, like Sherman.
Other ships can scout if their Upgrades and captain skills have
maximum concealment. For example DD Grozovoi can scout only if
it has maximum concealment setup and otherways not. Some ships
can scout even without concealment setup like DD Shima.
Scouting/spotting is more important than capping and more
important than shooring guns. Therefore DDs should not rush to
cap and should not not swim spotted while shooting guns.
Scouting skills mean mainly that you take suitable angles when
approaching to unspotted DDs. If the enemy DD swims towards 4
oclock then your scout should swim toward 3 oclock to spot him
and stay yourself for longer seconds unspotted. When both DDs
spot each other then you must evaluate the situation before
shooting the enemy DD. There are 2 main factors how to consider
before deciding to shoot guns.
Universal Torps is a term we created to explain an advanced
skill that may take some years to practice. It means one has
patience to wait before sending out torps, looks at minimap and
the positioning of enemy ships, tries different autoaims on
spotted enemies, and sends out torps so that they could hit many
ships. Patience is the most needed skill in most players in all
ship types. After developing the patience one can start to
developing Universal Torps skill.
Our Universal Smoke skill is not as important as Uni torps skill
and smoking others is done with DDs that have a regular smoke
only. Not radar/hydro DDs.
Most beginner DDs rush and are always on the move but more
advanced DDs don't cap, don't rush, and just stop infront of
caps to spot.
In Randoms narrow torpedo spread is more benefitial but in
Rankeds the wide spread is msotly benefitial.
DDs should expect torpedos to swim towards them in following
cases:
1) after a DD duel.
2) after a torpedo CR/BB died near by
3) after a CV attacked them
4) when in typical locations where DDs usually stand
When DDs expect torpedos they turn their noce towards the
direction the potentional torps come and swim towards the torps.
The easiest way to dodge torps is to meet them with nose ahead.
The main goal is to maximize your ship features, but the second
goal is to maximize your guns/tools usage. It means that try to
monitor when you next torpedos are ready to shoot them out as
soon as possible. Also the other tools like smoke is ideally to
be used/realized as soon as possible.
to be continued...

An awereness training exercise:
1. When in a DD duel compare your and the enemy HP and then
decide if you can win the duel with bulelts or not. If yes then
don't waste your torps. So, it is not here a suggestion what is
benefitial and what not but it is a suggestion to train your
awereness to take a look at your HP when you start duels. Humans
have slow and primitive mental system so it is difficult to put
your attention quickly on everything like look the minimap and
also look the HP amount etc. So, the suggestion here is to train
that awereness ability in DD duels. Remember this exercise here
to take a look at your and enemy HP next time. After practicing
some hundreds of times you don't waste anymore torps so often as
now. Very often i see people obviously being about to win the DD
duel but still send torps out towards the obviously loosing
enemy DD. And that is jsut a wasting and those wasted torps
could have been used practically in next moments. But beside the
goal-oriented explanation just train your mental system, train
your awereness. That's the exercise.

A screenshot of gunboat DDs. Their rate of fire is fast so you
see almost a solid arc/line from them to the enemy ship, like on
the picture the white arcs.
It requires a faster ship speed and fast guns reload. Mainly
Russian, French DDs, but on the exampel picture premium DDs.
Gunboat DDs can kill by bullets an enemy primitive ship which
has relatively slow HP like around 5-10k HP.
