Good points all.
Flexibility to adapt to a fluid situation is a must.
Communication (firing on X, reloading, calling out when you see
things swing for or against the team, etc) is a good foundation
as well.
On the subject of premium tanks, its hit or miss. I've seen some
really good tankers hose the OPFOR with their Premiums. But its
not the general rule. Unless you are really experienced in
fighting a Premium understand that you are already at a
disadvantage. You will get waxed if you go off leading the
charge instead of playing a support role if you are not top
tier. Even then play it smart.

Yeah, no one should take a T-71 unless in a tier VIII or higher
battle, and even then they BEST be good at it. Like, masters of
lights -- which is why you won't see me running one in a large
platoon. :grin:
Good point on the scouting, too, especially given the view
ranges on higher-tier heavies. (Only have tier VII, so keep
forgetting how well some of those suckers can spot!)
The thing I've noticed is how well those with whom I platoon do
on some maps, yet struggle with others. Take Abbey—staying
together at the base has led to us being demolished, taking one
flank got us capped, and just running up the center has resulted
in a butt whopping. Granted, tactics change depending on the
size of the game (4 v 4, 7 v 7, etc.) but would love for us to
gather some "Good Strategies for [Insert Map Here]" threads.

I play spotter in either my T29 or even my IS3 and seem to do
quite well at it. As said before flexibility is key. Once you
know the whereabouts of the opfor a strategy can be employed. I
feel I'm reasonably lucky I think fast and can change my tactics
on the fly. Hopefully some of my platoon buddies can attest to
this. I am generally fairly aggressive which often seems to
work for me. I'm always happy to get out there and spot/pin
down opfor so the rest of the team can do their thing. I
totally appreciate that doesn't work for everyone but as cheesie
says I tend to platoon with the same people regularly. They
know how I'm going to play and vice versa. That trust and
knowledge is irreplaceable.

So given that we need to be flexible, guessing we should avoid,
say, Churchills or TOGs unless just goofing around.

A bit more seriously, are there any tier VII or higher mediums
that would work well in platoon battles? Or do the heavies in
those tiers work just as well in terms of speed (relative, mind
you) and whatnot?

I firmly believe the T29 is the do it all tank at tier 7 I know
a fair few clan mates agree. We have platooned them from 4v4 to
7v7 regularly. Beaten tier 8s who underestimated us many times.

I'm not sure about tier VII, at tier VI it's the Sherman Jumbo
all the way, I've taken out many higher tier tanks with this
beast. As for heavies I agree with Bert, T29 for the win.

Like Bert and FLip, The T29s, maybe with a Tiger or 2 to operate
from the second level is the way to go.
If you are looking at Mediums-----
The Centurions, when fully upgraded can hold their own at Tier
VIII and IX. They have some of the best guns in their
respective tiers. They are fairly large mediums and can be
larger than some heavies, but they still have excellent mobility
as well as really nice gun depression which lend themselves to
using undulating terrain. I am working on the Russian mediums
and have heard great things from them at Tier VIII and above,
but am not there yet.
The Pershing is one of the medium tanks that people use in team
battles, where you only have a limited number of points to
allocate for tanks. The main reason is its great view range and
its great turret so that it can hull down and bounce some shots.
As far as Tier 7, man, IDK.... I love the Comet, but not sure if
it is something that you would want to bring into a battle. You
would probably be better off with a T71 or even a Chaffee. The
Tier VII Russian doesn't really impress me like the Tier VI did.
The T20 is OK but nothing to write home about.

You know what I'll say. Panther/Panther II/E-50/E-50M all the
way. A good medium that you are comfortable in is as good as
any heavy when being flexible. I also like to always have
something with some speed on it in my back pocket just in case.
Another good Tier VII medium is the T-43. In the right hands,
it's awesome. Much tougher than the Comet or T-20 in my
opinion. Tougher even than my beloved Panther...however not
nearly as good at keeping distance between yourself and the bad
guys.
