crew survival also affects crew xp gain.

Thought 'Mentor' was a great skill to go for first ? As it
accelerates the rest of your skills and perks quicker ? Correct
it does. Though have a look at this video as to why not to
bother with this skill. Will certainly be swapping this skill
out on all my crews. Also liked the swapping skills out for
       perks trick.

It seems like mentor might help once you have a metric ton of
skills, but I'd prefer to have something that, ya know, actually
       does something.
And Eagle Eye is an okay perk, and lets you know if, say, an
enemy is ammo racked. But it seems like one you'd get when you
have nothing left to go after (like your 16th perk or
something). But I dunno -- haven't got any crews that far yet.

Here's how I use Mentor. - I run it first then swap it out for
Sixth Sense. Then after I get around seven or eight skills, I
grind Mentor so I can swap it out for perks. It will take a
little less time than grind the perk on its own. Granted, you
have to spend 10 gold to swap, but I like the time savings.
Not to mention you gain no benefit from a perk until it is 100%
       trained. Unlike skills.

A trick taught in the video is to train a skill first. The skill
will work while your crew is training it ( a perk won't ). Once
the skill is taught to crew 100%, swap it out for the perk you
want i.e sixth sense. Repeat process.

crews training a skill/perk is all about xp
forget exact numbers but say the first 4 s/p cost 40k xp each
       the next 4 - 80k
double the xp every 4 upto 25 s/p which is in the 1.5 million
       per skill range
as i just found out one of my crews is at 16k xp per 1% of
       training
Mentor gives the crew an extra 10% to your crew training
overall for a fully skilled crew will save you approx 2.5 mill
       xp per crew
BIA will add another 0.5 %
The trick to training a crew is in my opinion ops/premiums/daily
       multipliers :
ops use the ops wisely some you can combine add to a premium
tank xp earning can get into 6-8 k xp for completion per game
although you do need a bit of luck getting these
daily do the x2 then move them through any premiums of the same
nation using the premium multiplier and again daily x2
some premium tanks have slightly better crew xp earning than
others ie T14 so if you can run half dozen games before
returning to ORIGINAL tank( it is free to move standard crew to
premiums and back DO NOT put in another standard tank .you will
get a msg on screen asking if you want to move crew for 50 %
=75% =100% if it is not original tank ) by doing this it is easy
to get a skill per week just by running 10 games a day
And i always overtrain a crew before moving to the new tank so
as to avoid those 75% private pile crews that manage to shoot
       30º off from where aiming
