What is Destiny?

No, I have not been under a rock. I am wondering what type of
game it is.
I know it's an FPS but beyond that what is it.
Is it story driven mission based game say like WoW in space or
is it CoD in space? Would it be anything like Mass Effect which
from the trailer it appears to rip ideas from ?
If it's just running and shooting I will give it a miss

It's really something new created from a mix of playstyles. It
has that old Halo feel to it, but I've also heard people say it
is similar to Borderlands and Mass Effect. The coolest part, I
think, is the fact that the game will evolve as the players take
it there. Yes, you have missions, but you also have the freedom
to go into that giant freaking hole over there where you run
into this crazy monster that will take 6 people to kill or
whatever. There is also a social aspect involved where you can
link up with other players. Bungie has been working on this game
for who knows how long so it's going to have some depth to it
and you aren't going to see Destiny 2 coming out in 10 months.

I'm really on the fence with this.
I like Halo...it reminds me of Halo...the similarities are there
for all to see.
I never liked Halo multi-player though. The 'social' aspect of
Destiny seems a real turn-off for me.
If there is a requirement to enter the social missions/events to
progress your character then this will be a big handicap for me.
Also, as the game 'evolves' does this mean that the best time to
get in on it is right now? How would this evolution present
itself to folk who pick it up further down the line in, say, 6
months?

Wondering this myself. It's probably going to be a few more
weeks before I start playing so am I going to be left on my own
to catch up with everyone? Who is going to want to come back to
help me complete levels that they have already done ages ago?
The dudes at Bungie are smart though so I don't think that will
be the case. Time will tell, I guess.

[/quote]I don't think it will be a problem joining late if the
game is popular. I played lotro for a long time and when you
generate a new character you start at the beginning, I assume
this will be similar. So you might have experienced players with
a new alt playing alongside your lower tier character

Alright, I was up until about 2am last night playing it and it
is fun. The Mass Effect/ Borderlands/MMO comparison is very
appropriate. I really do not like the multiplayer CoD type games
and this has some of those elements, but it is very peripheral.
So, like Halo, you do have a campaign mode, but where it differs
is that you can also do these same campaign missions with your
buddies. This is the main social aspect. You can create Fire
Teams (up to 4), with friends also playing Destiny, to do the
same missions that you would normally do solo. Typically you
would want to partner with people close to your own level. The
other thing you will notice, even if you are playing solo, is
that as you are wandering around the landscape, random real
people will pop in, who are doing their own thing, and may lend
you a hand. This can really help on some of those difficult
battles. It also could be a detriment, when you stumble on to a
much higher level person battling and you cannot touch the
baddies (just retreat and wait for them to respawn at your
level once that person leaves).
Like Borderlands, you can just wander around the landscape and
shoot stuff and pick up loot. To flesh this out a little you
can get bounties from the bounty hunter in the Tower (main hub)
to grind some XP. You can also pick up local missions that are
obtained from beacons, so that there is at least some purpose
for wandering around. You do have true/ classic multiplayer,
in the Crucible, but I haven't tried it yet.
Hope this helps. This is a ton of fun and it is better playing
it Co-op.

Sounds like fun but not a "must have" for me. Will try it in
time but in no rush,

If you're good at Halo MP you will do well in the crucible.
I'm old and slow so I suck at most MP's.
So far I am enjoying Destiny. I tend to like loot driven games.
Love the Borderlands games. In fact if anyone is interested in
getting together for the new Borderlands pre sequel next month
give me a holler.
