What is it about Americans and big girls panties?

The first time I landed in the US was during my naval days and
we were highly impressed with the vernacular , "go blow it out
of your ass" was a firm favourite and the addition of shitty at
the end made it better, but there were others.
I had a cock so hard a cat could not scratch, don't ask. I could
eat a dog off a garbage truck to name just two.
So it is with some consternation that I come across "big girls
panties" a lot in the forums. Surely you can do better. Think of
your heritage. If you want to insult someone just do it.
You might as well call someone a bitch as use the panties
expression. I just don't get it.

It's not so much meant to be an insult versus a jab. Someones
acting like a whiny child, you tell them, male of female to pull
up their big girl panties. I guess it's saying instead of
putting on a diaper you whiny little shit, suck it up princess
and move on. Just my take on it though.
