       Museum of the American GI
By: Maddog STS Date: January 9, 2019, 11:12 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
So, over Christmas break, a close friend and I went down to
Navasota, TX, to spend Christmas at my folks place, and to see
my brother & sisters, and their families.
While there, on Friday 12/28, we visited the Museum of the
       American G.I.
  HTML http://americangimuseum.org/,
       located in College Station, TX
(20mi north of my folk's place).
I will say, this is the cleanest museum I have ever been in,
especially one that had vehicles in it. And, EVERYTHING RUNS!
All vehicles are fully restored, run and operate as designed,
except for the fire systems. Even the AH1 Cobra was flown in,
and the PBR is fully operational, as well. The inside of the M5
looks like you could eat off any surface - everything was that
       clean!
Shamefully, I only took a few pix, but it was interesting, to
       say the least :thumb:[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=4]

So, as we were leaving, I noticed what looked like a naval
component or gun (it was battleship gray and rusty) out behind
the museum, along side a gravel road. So, I drove my dad's '95
F150 down and parked next to it. Upon examination, it was a dual
system AA gun, fully automated (had servos and auto-controls all
over it). Guessing around 50-75mm, but since the barrels had
been torched off forward of the breach, it was hard to tell. So,
after climbing around on that, as I was walking back to the
truck, I noticed a tank out in the field to our left. Without
thinking about it, I drove into the field to get closer,
stopping about halfway to walk closer and get some pictures.

After looking at the tank in the field, an M47 Patton awaiting
restoration, I walked back to the truck - my friend had stayed
in the truck, since he's an aircraft guy, not an AFV guy.
Started the engine, put in Drive, and she went forward about a
foot, and nothing...I reversed, then forward again, and went
about 10 feet, and bogged into the mud. Tried reversing, then
forward, to rock it, and nothing - I was stuck!
After some futile attempts using some sticks and a board to get
traction, I figured I was gonna need help.
Went into the museum, and the owner told me a tow service to
call. Tow service said they wouldn't do it, as I was too far
       from an "improved" road.
So, back in the museum, I informed the owner, and he said he
would pull me out with his HUUMV (that was currently on
display), as long as I washed it when we were done.
       My reply was "Done Deal!"
       [attach=1][attach=2]
When we were done, the only thing dirty on the HUMMV was the
tire treads - he didn't sink at all - so the owner said I didn't
have to wash it! I asked if I could buy him and his 2 employees
dinner (it was just after 5pm), and he said "No, that isn't
necessary, but you can make a donation to the museum."
So, I thanked him, went back inside, dropped a $50 bill in the
       donation box, and we left.

When you go back up north do you retain a Texas twang for a
       little while?
