New Player Mentors

Has there been any thought of new player Mentorship and platoon
introduction?
I know Ox and a few others have been that first point of
contact, but have we institutionalized this concept? What i
would like to see is a few people who are decent players be that
first "friend" for new members and platoon with them 1-2 times
to both ease them into platooning as well as to get a sense of
their current skill level and provide training if needed.
My ideal for this approach would see the new member platoon up
with multiple different mentors over a few sessions, 1 on 1 to
start each individual session and then joining in with a large
group(if available). The primary reason to have 1 on 1 is to
avoid the crosstalk that is inherent in large parties and for
those that need the training maximize the training time.
I would be willing to offer my services if requested, though I
have some specific time restrictions for when I would be
available in most cases.
Thoughts?

A note of caution - this used to be sorta the idea behind
Training Sundays. It got so no-one new would turn up. Then we
changed it to "PM a trainer and set up a time" - I've only ever
gotten one request for that and then the guy never turned up,
was never heard from again and didn't re-register on this new
forum. So we need to think carefully about the best way to
overcome inertia and make it work. More pro-active.

but aren't we all mentors, trainers and ambassadors?
If we give some one the title, job or function that will allow
less interested members to justify not training or welcoming new
members.
"it isn't my job" I have heard that more than a few times over
the last couple of months.
Isn't it all of our responsibilities?

Yes, Cheesie As Senior members and Staff, it is ALL our
responsiblity to extend a welcome to all new members, and make a
serious attempt to platoon up with and introduce them around.
However, since schedules and available play times vary, this can
indeed be difficult at times.
The idea behind any type of "official welcoming and mentoring"
is to ensure that at least 3 or 4 Senior/Staff members are
committed to making sure that all newcomers receive the welcome
and introduction they deserve. This committment would come
before their stats, or even their own personal play time.
If this is something that anyone might be interested in, please
PM me, oxidative stres, Cernig10 or Phunk Pilot with your
intent, and we will see how best to proceed from there.
Thanks everyone!

My thoughts on "mentor" encompassed multiple roles. Foremost
was of that "first" friendly face. The Meet and Greet role so
to speak. There are a LOT of people who are just shy and
having one person, and then different one follow on in close
succession can hopefully help overcome the shyness factor people
would have. Training would be a side benefit for those that
request it/need it.
THEN, once you have them hooked, the things like the Training
Sundays could come as follow up work for those that might be
interested. Of course, it would be MUCH easier if we had a
training room in the game, but I have no idea if that's coming
anytime soon from WG, so we have to do the best we can in real
life situations.
Yep.. more proactive. I bring this up because of the number
of posts I have seen about platoon etiquette and seeing some say
they are a bit shy about just jumping into a party.

Even though I have been platooning for 2 months now i still have
that initial thought of "should i join the party?" Which
disappears as soon as i do
For the new members maybe an party invite would give them that
nudge they need to join the platoon. As for training I can still
use it, even if is just getting past a 50% win rate.

I think a quick one on one would be appropriate. Mentor is a
good word for this job, however Greeter might actually work
better. Maybe this already happens, but maybe when somebody new
registers for the forum, they are assigned to another member to
just do a quick meet and greet. They can find out how much they
have platooned, what kind of tanks they like to run and maybe
introduce them around a bit. Oxi did this for me, and I think
it's a good jumping off point to help people feel at home.
One of the most important things that Joe mentioned is the large
parties. They can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Another is
introducing them to trying to launch 2 platoons at the same time
in hopes of getting everybody into the same battle.
However you all want to do it is fine by me, however I think
it's best to spread it around a bit.
