Giggles aside, we might get a training room together with folks
who are interested in discussing this or presenting their
battle??

.....and i am coming up with some lists of vehicles and the
other items you mentioned (maps, ammo, etc). So far i have
initial info on the Battle of Khalkhin Gol and the Battle of
Brody - the Battle of Arras seemed to involve too much infantry
to be considered a true tank battle so dunno why they mentioned
it.

Replacement book showed up yesterday. Just skimming it and, wow,
the Afrika Korp had garbage until the very end. Panzer Group
Afrika became Panzer Army Afrika around late January/early
February 1942. By May 1942, both sides are set up on the Gazala
line. Tank strength May 1942:

Not sure yet what the Allied "I" tank is referring to, will have
to keep reading. Also the Pz III Special; not sure which 'Ausf'
designation this was, but it is noted this version had a high
velocity 50mm, which was the only tank Rommel was said to have
to deal with the Grants. Yet the entire Army has 19 of these.
The Grant shifted whatever technological edge the Germans
supposedly had up to this time, to the Allies. The book also
notes that while the official listing shows 40 Pz IV's, that may
have been a typo, because in correspondences it seems they
mention 4 Pz IV's. The reason they are mentioned is that they
have absolutely zero ammunition for these 4 tanks. So they don't
really even count. Was rather surprised by the lack of
Mathilda's. Clearly, realistic figures would not make for a fun
SnS....

The Pz III "Special" you referred to above has the 50mm gun in
L/42 and L/60 variations. It was officially the Ausf. J of the
Pz III line. The "Special" designation was coined by the
British, since it was the first German tank encountered (in N
Africa) capable of dealing with the Matilda.
The Allied "I" tank may be a Mk I of some variation, possibly
the Matilda Mk I, which looked nothing like the Matilda Mk II.
The Mk I was only in service from '38-40, so this is unlikely.
Also, there were Cruiser Mk I tanks in N Africa, but again, it's
unlikely that they were still being used at this stage of the
war
Another possibility is a Valentine Mk I, of which the 1st Army
Tank Brigade had an undisclosed number of...Gazala also had
Matilda II tanks, fielded by the 7th Royal Tank Reg.

I bet uou are on to something with the Valentine, Chuck. I know
at one point Rommel captures at least 30 Valentines that he
deems still 'fightable'. Perhaps the Matty's just hadn't gotten
there by May.

Rommel had more than just Valentine's he had also captured some
of the goddess of the desert... :shocked:

If memory serves me correctly ( :palm: ), 1st Army abandoned
some Valentines when they pulled back to Tobruk.
