$19.49?! You could make one for 19.49 cents!
[/quote]
Uh ... no, you can't. At least not that will last through the
first rain storm. These will last about 5+ years if you take
them down during the winter.
ADDING: That sounded kinda jerkfacey, but not my intention!!
Thing is, we have a HUGE wasp issue in our backyard and have
tried pretty much every single product to try and keep them away
(short of killing them, which we'd rather not do). These things
are the ONLY ones that have ever worked. IMHO, worth every
single penny (and only $7 each).

Aren't you in luck...
Carpenter ants are a total pain. If the infestation is bad
enough, you may want to consider a tent fumigation. It's a
hassle and expensive and you have to continue treatment, but it
will get all of them.
A local company may come out and do a drill and treat between
all of the studs.
You may also get a good company that will come out and treat
with Termidor and that will do a great job, as they don't know
it's there, thus continued business as usual. Ants are very
social, so the ones that go through the termidor will
unwittingly spread it to the others. It could take up to 2
weeks, but will kill 100% of the carpenter ants.
You must make certain that you don't have any foliage or
anything else that may be a bridge over the termidor.
Once you get rid of the carpenter ants, make sure that you keep
foliage and stuff away, stay on at least a quarterly service and
keep watch.
Sorry this took so long to post, I had a couple of meetings to
go to...lol.
Good Luck! tank emoticon

I used Terro the last ant invasion I had. I'm no expert on ants,
but it got rid of them by killing the queen along with the rest
of the colony. It made my STBX super happy to see the trail of
ants go away in a couple days. The most effective bug killer I
think I've bought.

I got it at Home Depot for a good price, not too different from
the official website price from what I remember.

You also wanna cut away any plants or other vegetation from the
side of your house. They use these things as pathways to get in.
Carpenter ants need alot of water also so look for wet areas
right against the foundation also. I spread a insecticide about
8" around the foundation outside every spring.

Ant update.... They are not carpenter ants...woot....woot! but
are:
The bigheaded ant (BHA), Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), is a
very successful invasive species that is sometimes considered a
danger to native ants and has been nominated as among 100 of the
"World's Worst" invaders (Hoffman 2006)
.....it appears as if they "Rugger" up to the top turret
size....

So being that this is Florida, we are near water, we have bit
the bullet and will employ an exterminating company for yearly
service. They will come out and take care of this problem and
do an inspection for other pests, check quarterly for any type
of pest problem, termite inspection twice a year and any time we
have a problem pest wise, they will come out.....total cost
$325.00.....I believe it is well worth it......or more to the
point the wife has insisted on it.....
Thanks all for the advice and help, it is much
appreciated......Keep Tankin' you glorious bastards!

Could save some money... had an issue with Fire ants. So he got
a few gallons of gasoline, a couple of beers and went scorched
earth on them.
His reasoning was that the grass can always be regrown. Now
forgive him as he was just a country boy from North Carolina,
and ran shine back in the 50s along with some of the early guys
who would become part of NASCAR.

Yep. We had a front yard of just dirt for six months. I'll see
if I can find an old pic.

The real problem with these "Big Headed" ants is that they
aren't really ON the list of "100 World's Worst" pests, they
just THINK that they are...
