Derp Gun 101 !

---------------------------------------------------------
I thought i would put together a little post here outlining some
of the basics about one of my favorite pieces of gear in the
game... the Derp Cannon.
I know there are a lot of misconceptions and wrong ideas about
this style of play so lets try to clear this up some....
Cons - 1st...and most important ...derping is NOT for
everyone. It has long load times , sometimes sporadic accuracy ,
and all of the derp cannons have a very visible arc , which
means your not going to fire a laser line toward anyone , its
going to take some time for the shell to get there. Remember...
this is an artillery cannon your firing.. not a normal one.
Pros - Almost every single tank either you tier or lower
has the very likely possibility of being a ONE SHOT ! Combined
with the Dead Eye Skill you will be doing critical hits a lot
more than with normal guns and rounds. Even when faced with much
higher tiers than yourself , you will usually be able to peck
out 10-15 points of damage here and there where the normal gun
and AP shells would either bounce or just not do anything at
all.
Rules !! - You Must... and i mean MUST use HE rounds when
using a Derp Gun to get its full effect. Remember , using this
tactic is about one thing and one thing only... pure damage and
as much as possible at once !! Using AP rounds with a derp gun
is simply robbing you of its true usefulness.
- On moving targets you will need to
learn to lead people , and by a decent distance. This is
different from each gun , as each countries guns have different
characteristics . Over time , and with practice you will learn
how much distance is needed for each one.
- Taking precious time to aim for weak
spots is NOT always a necessity. Popping around a corner and
blind firing into the front of an enemy tank will often lead to
just as good of a result as taking the extra 2 seconds to zoom
in and try to aim.
There are obviously some tanks and derp guns that are better
than others , i personally prefer the german on the Panzer 4 ,
2nd would be the american 105 on just about anything tier 6 or
lower . Russians will have slightly longer than normal loads ,
even as far as derps go , however they pack way more of a punch.
The British i must say , is one of the most difficult to get
used to. I would suggest trying it on the Cruiser II 1st and get
used to it. They have EXTREME arches to them and almost take 2-3
times longer to get to a distant target. Please dont start
learning with them.
In closing , Derping is something i have been mastering and
working on since beta on the PC almost 3 years ago , and it
takes time and patience . Dont get frustrated , the rewards of
using one are very well worth it. The 1st time you roll around
the battlefield and rack up 3 or 4 ONE-SHOTs , you will be
addicted , like me !!
Derping is not for everyone, but once it is...it will be your
goto tanks.
Hope this helps a little bit.

My favorite derp gun is the M4 Sherman packing the 105 it hits
really hard on anything tier VI or lower.

One major advantage of the derp is you can hit targets behind
cover due to the ballistic arc. Shooting movers with derp takes
lots of practice. I've made many shots over 500m with my M4/105
without binos. I have more sniper and topguns with it than any
other tank Derp guns on Hetzler 10.5cm and the T40 105mm are OP
as hell for tier which is why they are my favorite tier IV
tanks. If the M3 Lee had a 105 it would be loved by nearly all
IMHO. :palm:

Great article/post.
I agree Derp is not for eveyone but I'm loving it.
One thing in your notes though:

I've been using various Derps for a while now and I admit I have
never used HE. I have a top gun from it, many 4 or 5 kill games
and I've never so much as loaded a HE in the barrel. Am I
missing out? HE has slightly less Pen and you're already low on
Pen by using a Derp so are you robbing Peter to pay Paul by
giving up some Pen for more Damage?
BTW: My Fav's for Derp are the T18, T40 and Panzer IV and M4.

HE is all about damage not pen.

Thanks for the excellent post, and the lesson. I practiced my
derp-fu a little tonight. It's getting better. Thanks again.

Actually yes , you are missing out. One of the most common
misconceptions is to us AP with a derp gun. Look at it like this
, you have already committed to taking a gun with very low pen ,
taking AP as your ammo is just back-tracking. "true" derping is
all about damage , as much as you can get in a single shot as
possible. Getting that extra small amount of pen from an AP
round is really not doing you much good , as you said your
already at a very low pen stat anyways.
Try it with HE.. i promise you it will get you better results in
the long run !

Like Daswagdaddy101 said on the ballistic arc, the aim tends to
run high. So when shooting I'll shot a little below center mass.
I finds this leads to more trackings on them as well.

I've recently been running the big derp (not the derp lite)
package on the KV-1S and have been doing OK. Not stellar, but
OK.
One tactic I've been using, and I'm not sure if it's valid or
not, is to only fire on tanks that have a good deal of health
left and leave those with only a few HP to my other team
members.
I do this because there is only limited ammo (26 in total) and
it's a waste of potential damage if I'm using a 122mm shell to
take out a tank on 10HP.
The way I figure it, if I've only got a limited number of
A-bombs, take out the big strategic targets rather than log
cabins.
Of course in a pinch, where I can see intervention is needed, I
will take out the low health targets.
Am I thinking straight here, or am I off target?
