I started as aerospace mechanical engineer, started first on
airframes and then moved to hydraulics and systems. First
programs were Phantom, Hawk, Harrier, Tornado then a stint on
Nimrod then over to Airbus wings. During the Falklands I
supported the Harriers again, then worked on putting Sidewinders
on Nimrods (for the colonials, that is a Boeing 707 with bad ass
missiles hanging from its wings!!) then back to the Tornado and
onto Group 1 Eurofighter design and development team. After
wanting a break i spent 2 years on Formula 1 Ferrari bodies
(somewhat of a carbon-fibre expert at the time).
I was asked to move to the US to work on the A-12, then the F-22
and F-16 upgrades before becoming a corporate stuffed shirt!!.
I worked for Allied-Signal/Honeywell as a VP, Corporate Contract
and Strategic Planning Director. Traveled the world, never saw
anywhere except airports, hotel rooms, conference tables and
then back to the airport for the next destination. I flew in and
out of Beijing 30 times but never walked within the grounds of
the Forbidden Place. My craziest trip was 4 hours in Tokyo then
back on the same plan I had arrived on... I was averaging over
140,000 air miles a year, had enough and had to walk away.

Had enough of corporate so I agreed to salvage and rebuild a
small company in CA. they specialised in F-16 & F-22, then we
moved it to AZ and became heavily involved in M1 Abrams, Bradley
& F-35 new designs. Unfortunately we built it too well and the
family sold it to big corporate so I walked away to another
small company. Last set of products where 5" naval guns (bring
it on T-95 :1foryou:) Mini-guns 5.56 & 7.62, Phalanx, Tomahawk
etc. and I was back on planes...
I quit and started my own company in January. We design critical
application & high reliability hardware and software design, we
already have prototype units on F-18 and Bradley's. plus a
Prostate Cancer Scanning machine. We also designed and
manufacture the electronic control unit for thermal imaging
cameras used by Law Enforcement so, if you boss ever keeps you
in the dark I have a camera that will help you find him.
It is a real eye opener moving from big corporate - what you
want $250 million for capital equipment.. okay, to what the hell
do you mean Staples want $56 for an ink cartridge... quite a
humbling perspective change.

Awesome insight to the back rounds of the careers our members
have had. What an over whelming response. I spent most of my
career working for Precision Cast parts corp. PCC is the world
leader in structural investment castings, forged components, and
airfoil castings for aircraft engines and industrial gas
turbines. I started in Pittsburgh as a toolmaker and EDM
specialist. Shortly after I started I was asked to move with the
division to Colorado. Two other divisions were located there at
the time. PCC decided it would be in there best interest to
consolidate all three divisions under one roof ( A new 1.5
million square foot plant ) as to have the ability to pull
resources from one to the other. Soon after a secondary research
department was developed to handle all the machine work. I was 1
of 2 who started the department. Next thing I knew I was running
3 full shifts plus weekend shifts, 60 plus people and a budget
of 3.5 mil dollars. I also was part of a group that would
trouble shot other divisions world wide. There were 29 divisions
world wide. I moved several times throughout the US to either
start up(s) or help improve the division that needed help. Like
most I got to the point I wanted to move on to my own thing.
Next I worked as lead supervisor under VP. with a company the
produced paint spray guns while contracting my own work in. This
was more of play time for me. The shop supported their own in
house race program from Jr.drags of top fuel. We also supported
local race programs through machining to testing and all things
between. We also built costume bikes, I worked with 4 other guys
that we won several times in bike build-offs at Sturgis Rally,
Daytona bike week, Thunder in the Rooks, Denmark, Sweden, and
Norway.
Then I moved back home working for Chick machining Inc, Edgar
Ind., and Oberg Industries where I retired early. I am currently
a co-owner of a small company Industrial Odd Jobs LLC. We
provide specialized products used in the steal industry for
safety. I also provide turn key programs to several company's
throughout the US, I program in 7 different formats from 3 axis
to 9 axis machine centers. I own (3) 5 axis CNC routers, a Mazak
INTEGREX i-400 turn center, Agie Charmilles wire EDM and other
items that keep me busy. My wife helps operate all the equipment
when I need her too. I married a coal miners daughter who does
not mind getting her hands dirty.
Three of my five kids are now journeyman machinist, Ken ,
Jeremiah, and my oldest daughter Dominique. Our plan is for me
to develop the shop, build the foundation, while they get
experience working for others while working for me part time. I
have recently put up a steal building. The company has been
doubling each year revenue over the past 4 years, even with me
being sick. Kids have done a great job when I am down. When the
time is right I will turn it over to them full time. It will be
theirs to own and operate. "My oldest son always jokes with me
that he will keep me on as highest paid janitor until things go
wrong, then I can fix it do my magic then return back to my
janitor duties."
" Did find it odd that several of us have worked on the same
projects over the years. I have 12 years and 400 parts invested
into each F-22 built. I also did same for F-35.
