       My Sons FIRST Robotics Tourney
By: oxidative stres Date: March 12, 2016, 9:20 am

A few of you guys and gals know that my son is on a high school
       competitive robotics team.....No....Not battlebots......
This weekend is their first Tournament at Worcester Polytechnic
Institute and it is being live-streamed on Twitch. NEFIRST_RED

I am a HUGE advocate for this organization (FIRST Robotics) and
the amazing things it has done for my son. They sponsor a Lego
robotics league for older elementary and middle school kids as
       well.

       They have corporate
sponsors, like United Technologies, that basically pay for my
son's teams program, so its pretty cheap to participate. The
kids design, build, program and drive the robots under guidance
of professional engineering mentors.... There are over 3,000
       teams world-wide.

Last year their team was one of a couple of hundred that went to
the world championships in St. Louis.
This year the theme is Stronghold... and it plays out on a small
       hockey rink sized field.....
In FIRST STRONGHOLD, two Alliances of three robots each are on a
Quest to breach their opponents’ fortifications, weaken their
tower with boulders, and capture the opposing tower. Robots
score points by breaching opponents’ defenses and scoring
boulders through goals in the opposing tower. During the final
20 seconds of the Quest, robots may surround and scale the
       opposing tower to capture it.

Congrats OX! The future neesd of autonomy will provide many jobs
for the kids involved in robotics. Keep your son going, he
should have a great future ahead :thumb:

       That is so cool!
I recall watching some of the live stream last year...was really
neat to see those machines in action.

Yeah, pretty dammed proud. He got accepted into UConns
Mechanical Engineering program for next year.
Those picts are from the practice field. I'll post some of the
actual competition later. Getting ready to drive up and see the
       qualifying.
His team number is #173 RAGE Robotics, if anyone is checking it
       out!

Pit Row..... Many of the pits had machining equipment as well as
       3-D printers.
