       Tank Model Kits
       By: guest438 Date: January 31, 2016, 12:52 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi All
Thinking about pursuing model making / building again. A very
long time ago I used to enjoy building cars I think mainly from
Airfix & was thinking it might be something I would like to
pursue again but with Tanks this time. I do enjoy detailed work
so the more complicated the better. I will probably kick off
with a few simple kits just to get myself back into the swing of
       things again.
Would like to hear if any other OFF'ers are into model making &
       which kits they would recommend.
       :thankyou:

When I was a kid, Testor made some really nice kits. Now
all the Testor I see are really low quality that assembe with a
couple screws in about 5 minutes. I still bought a few to
       practice my airbrushing and weathering.
I have 6 or 7 very nice kits by Dragon. Up here they run
anywhere from $35-75. Before I had to pack everything up, I
started a Panzer III. Very detailed kits. The more popular kits,
like the Tiger, have a ton of 'hop up' parts available, like
detailed interiors and metal upgrades. I look forward to getting
everything out of storage so I can keep working on it, but that
       is going to be awhile.

I was thinking of this as well and just picked up a Panzer 4 kit
by Dragon. About $40. I have no problem with putting them
together, but am wondering what people use for camo paints.

Search air brushing and weathering on you tube. Acrylics are all
the rage now. I was leary at 1st, but they won me over. And they
are a lot easier to make oil or grease 'wash' effects for. I
       really want to do some chipping effects when I paint the Tiger;
winter camo chipped/worn away revealing the original grey paint.
Diana got me some awesome books aimed just at German camo for
the modeller. Really wishing my stuff wasn't all packed up

Can't say I know much about Military models but Tamiya makes a
lot of detailed R/C vehicles and also non R/C Military vehicles.
Check out Tower Hobbies for some ideas an as a reference.
They've been in business for over 20 yrs. Link below..

Tamiya makes nice stuff, very spendy though. I built Ivan
Stewarts Class 1 truck around 1995. Great truck.

Depends on the user. Some like Acryllics, other enamels. I
preferred enamels, as they are a little cheaper, and I found
them easier to mix to get the color I wanted. Testors has some
really good military class paints that you should be able to
find on-line or at your local hobby shop look for Model Masters
by Testors. they go for about $4.50 a jar. There are some
on-line guides for painting various tanks and planes. Much
cheaper than the books I used to buy :)
Are you airbrushing or free style by brush? If brush, try and go
with camel hair. Some synthetics are good, but I found when
painting nothing beats a camel. But everyone has their favs.
