So I've been anticipating this little beauty since it was
announced back at E3. Upgraded Xbox One controller with quite a
bit of customization options, paddles, swappable sticks, etc etc
etc. I had quite a bit of trouble getting it because BB tried to
tell me that mine hadn't come in. After raising a stink; they
magically "found" mine in the back. Apparently they're sold out
everywhere. Anyways; how does this thing pertain to tanks and is
it worth your 150.00 (or at the moment 250.00 on the 'Bay) I
have not put alot of hard use on this controller via tanks yet
but preliminary thought are as follows
My writeup is going to center around how this flows with Control
Scheme C as I use it and prefer it for the benefits it provides
to driving.
Overall the feel and appearance are quite nice. You have the
revised shoulder buttons which feel a bit easier to engage and
have a nice satisfying click vs. the more deliberate force
needed to push them on the original controller. My understanding
is that the revised standard controllers also have these
shoulder buttons though so kind of a wash there.
The weight of the thing is marginally heavier and the finish
feels quite nice to the hand. A sort of satin finish; it really
feels quite svelte. The best part though are the hand grips
themselves. They are textured plastic which improves grip and I
can see them being far more comfortable over long sessions since
they don't really feel as if they would slip on you.
The biggest improvement though I would say is in the analog
stick movement. Some say the Xbox One sticks move too freely for
their tastes. The 360 had tighter sticks that required more
force to move. I think this controller falls somewhere in
between the two at least with the standard nubs. Not too loose,
not too firm. You have three different stick options, the
standard concave with the diamond edges, extra tall versions of
the same stick and ones that are in between with a rounded top
instead of concave (think PS style) See the pic for comparo of
the two alternates.
I find the original ones to be most comfortable but I'm used to
them. I could see the others being useful if you want a shorter
throw but I do not. I also don't think that precision movement
is as easy with shorter throw sticks. I also really dislike how
the stick attach to the controller though. They are magnetic as
is every other removable item on this controller. I don't feel
that is the best choice for them as they do come off somewhat
easily. They are keyed though so they won't rotate around on
you.
The triggers have two different settings. One which is the
original or you can flip a switch underneath and it cuts the
travel down by around half. Much quicker engagement using
setting two. Unless you value the ability to vary your speed;
use setting two as it will allow you to toggle forward/reverse
quite a bit quicker. I will say that I could see this being an
even bigger boon to those who use Control A or B as you can get
shots off quicker/zoom quicker.
Now; onto the biggest draw of this controller for me; the 4
paddles. You have two on each side for a total of 4. Two longer
ones you would probably be best to use for middle finger, two
shorter ones in front that Now; you can use all 4 or you can
use just two (or one or three who am I to judge) as you see fit.
They all attach via magnet. You have to twist them back and the
come off the hinge they attach to. These don't have the travel
to them that I thought they would. you press them they engage.
No real variance but they're digital so its understandable. The
magnetic force on these is by far the weakest of all. Very
flimsy feeling. Quite disappointing really.
The D-pad eh, standard or a kind of odd, circular option which I
don't feel would benefit WoT very well at all. and your old
standby; the cross. These are both metal and have a nice weight
to them. Nothing too special to write home about here.
Face buttons, other than being all black they're the exact same
thing; no difference from your bog standard models.
You do have an app you can dl from the market place that allows
you to customize the buttons and what they do. And yes I mean
EVERY button, face buttons, D pad, triggers etc. You can adjust
stick sensitivity as well as the triggers. This is probably one
of the better options. Especially if you have the need or want
to use different configurations. there is a switch in the middle
of the controller you can swap between two different schemes you
might have saved on the controller.
So big question; is it worth the 150 bucks?
I don't really feel that it is. Sure it has options out the
wazoo but some design decisions really make me question the long
term durability of the controller as well as its usefulness
overall. Let alone for one game. If it were $100.00; maybe but
at the current price point it really doesn't offer enough of a
benefit for us tankers unless you really, really really cannot
stand any of the control setups we have available to us (Please
WG! let us have customizable controls) The sheer flimsiness of
the magnetized paddles is what turns me off as they were my
biggest draw for the thing.
I think mine is going up on eBay. I can make the money back from
it and pick one up later if I change my mind. Wanna buy a
controller?

Dom,
Is the Wildcat wireless? I see the cable, but don't see anything
about wireless capability. Unless I'm missed it, which is
possible. Its early...7.5 hours until end of work, my coffee is
cold, and I'm not wearing sunglasses.

nope , none of there stuff is wireless. most of the "pro" gamers
frown upon wireless gear , even headphones. the cables are VERY
heavy duty tho , with a insulated/cloth wrap.

Yeah I noticed that wrapped cable. Nice touch.Same quality as my
guitar cables. You pay a little more, but the cloth wrapped
cables are more durable IMO than standard equipment cables. When
I used to play with a band, I hated those plastic cables that
always seemed to short out after about two months of steady use.
Duct tape and splicing only goes so far.

Found a place that has a deal on these--$120. They are out of
stock, but they are taking orders for them and they are shipped
directly from the manufacturer....

anyone check to see if we can source directly from the
manufacturer? I hate to pay a reseller for having something
dropped ship. Maybe they have an ecommerce site.
