From the WOT website:
Coming soon in Update 2.1, the Pz.Kpfw IV we're all familiar
with will be split into three variants -- the Ausf. A, D, and H.

•
IV Hydrostat)
These bruisers not only have varying armor strengths but also
offer a variety of armaments so that you can select the setup
best suited to your playstyle. Like all medium tanks, these are
best used to outflank slower opponents and take shots at the
enemy sides or rear whenever possible. With lethal 7.5cm KwK
guns (among others) at their disposal, these Pz.Kpfw IVs will
soon be a dreaded sight for enemy tanks of the same tier.
TANK SPLIT DETAILS
-Players who currently own the Pz.Kpfw IV in their Garage will
be given the Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf. H
-Players will be given the corresponding package on the Pz.Kpfw
IV Ausf. H to match their progress on the original Pz.Kpfw IV
-If you had Premium ammo or Consumables equipped on the Pz.Kpfw
IV, they will be removed and you will be compensated their Gold
price in Silver
-If you had Equipment on the Pz.Kpfw IV, you will be given the
cost in Silver back
-All customization, camouflage, emblems and inscriptions on the
Pz.Kpfw IV will transfer to the Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf. H (Gold or
Silver purchased)
-The Crew on the Pz.Kpfw IV will be transferred to the Pz.Kpfw
IV Ausf. H
-Tank XP on the Pz.Kpfw IV will be transferred to the Pz.Kpfw IV
Ausf. H
Curious to learn more about Germany's workhorse medium tank?
Check out our historic brief below!
The Pz.Kpfw IV was the backbone of the German tank forces and
was in production from the beginning of the war through the end
of it, fought in all theatres, and came in many configurations.
The new split in World of Tanks Xbox is only representative of
the range of tanks which were produced.
The predecessor of the Pz.Kpfw IV was the Begleitwagen, the
escort tank, from Krupp. After a lot of tweaking, this became
the first model of Pz.Kpfw IV, the Ausf A. With barely enough
armour to stop a machine gun’s bullet, but nonetheless packing a
7.5cm gun, 35 of these were built prior to WW2.
The last of the pre-war designs was the D. Both the C and the D
were incremental improvements over the B, 134 Cs and 232 Ds
being built, with a slightly modified mantlet and thicker side
armor. The last of the short 75s was the Ausf F, with a full 5cm
of armor from the beginning. Although initially 900 Fs were
ordered, only 470 were built before it was decided that the
original concept of having the Pz.Kpfw III as general purpose
tank, and the Pz.Kpfw IVs providing the HE back-up was not going
to work, and that the Pz.Kpfw IV needed to have a good
high-velocity gun
Come about May of 1943, production changed to the Ausf H. The
main change here was an increase in the final drive gear ratios.
This slowed down the tank’s top speed to 38km/h, but increased
the vehicle’s cross-country capability, and also reduced strain
on the power train. 2,132 of these were manufactured.
The poor old Pz.Kpfw IV never really get enough credit. Not only
did it not have a cool name, it also had the misfortune of
bearing a superficial resemblance to a Tiger. Although it’s easy
for us now to look at a photograph and tell the difference, in
the chaos of a battlefield, looking down the sight at a blocky
vehicle turning its long muzzle-brake-equipped gun towards you,
checking for the fine details tended to evade the thought
process of the allied personnel facing them, and they would be
routinely mis-identified as Tigers.
The original design was fundamentally excellent. It was a viable
vehicle at the beginning of the war, and had enough upgrade
potential that it was still perfectly serviceable in its latest
configuration at the end of the war. A large number of vehicles
from the late 1930s time period would have been incapable of
this improvement and would have to have been replaced by an
entirely new design.
That said, although the tank was keeping pace with the allied
opposition through early 1944, the arrival of the T-34/85 and
M4A2E8 began to see it becoming outclassed in pretty much every
characteristic, though the difference was slight enough that the
Pz.Kpfw IV always had to be treated with respect. Still, the
engine remained a 265hp V12 when Shermans were rolling around
with 500hp V8s, the suspension remained leaf spring bogies while
Allied tanks had independent or VVSS systems, and the German
manufacturing system was such that production remained slow, and
repairs difficult.
The upcoming split in World of Tanks thus reflects the doctrinal
change in what the versions of Pz.Kpfw IV were supposed to do.
The earlier Ausf. D is reasonably nimble and armoured for its
tier, but starts off with a 5cm cannon taken from the Panzer III
(This was, in real life, an experimental variant). Though fast
firing and accurate, it lacks the ability to do significant
damage. Similarly, the mid-range short 7.5cm gun does plenty of
damage to lightly armoured vehicles, but the low velocity means
‘if you can hit them’, usually at short range. Remember, the
Ausf D was not intended to be a tank hunter. The top
configuration provides a reasonable long 7.5cm, however, which
makes this quite a capable general-purpose vehicle.
The later Ausf. H not only allows for a higher-velocity 7.5cm to
punch through more armour, but also addsSchurtzen, the extra
side plates around the turret and on the hull sides which was
developed to stop anti-tank rifle rounds.
Although there are no such rifles in World of Tanks, the
Schurtzen does provide a little more protection against high
explosive rounds, causing them to detonate away from the
vehicle. This is thus a sound upgrade to the previous tier
vehicle, and just like the real tank, it allows the vehicle to
remain viable even amongst the profusion of next-generation
vehicles which it encounters later in time.
