This guy and his mate were hunting and split up and they lost
sight of each other. He bent down to remove a stone out of his
boot just as his mate pulled the trigger on his 270 and the
bullet ripped across his shoulder blade instead of getting a
       lung.

Sad... The VAST majority of firearms accidents could be avoided
if people would just exercise the 4 rules and a little common
sense. Let me guess... His buddy was taking a 'sound shot'? as
in, I think I hear something...

Very little game can be hunted at night in the U.S. Predator and
invasive species/varmint control does though. I will have to
look up NZ's 7 rules, glad he wasn't hurt worse.

same here. lots of possums and rabbits. deer and goats fall
under introduced pest as well. same with wild boars.
1 treat every firearm as loaded.
2 always point in safe direction.
3 only load when ready to fire.
4 identify target beyond all doubt.
       5 check fire zone.
6 Store firearm and ammo safely.
       7 no alcohol or drugs.

Yeah it works out to basically the same:
1 Treat every firearm as if it's loaded. ...
2 Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to
       destroy. ...
3 Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it. ...
4 Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target
       and ready to fire.

Sounds like 3 was the big one for this guy.
Does NZ fall under/comply with Australia's gun restrictions?

New Zealand have their own rules but hey are similar to
Australia. No full automatic weapons. Pistols need to be stored
at a gun club and cannot be removed.
Weapons need to be stored in a locked and preferably alarmed gun
safe. When in transit they need to be in a trunk of the vehicle.
You have to renew your licence every 10 years. Before you get
one police do a back ground check and talk to your parents,
relations and friends to find what kind of person you are.

No pistols outside of a gun club? I like that. In my state,
Kansas, they just made it legal where anyone can carry a
concealed weapon without a permit or training. Can't say it
       makes me feel any safer.
