Not quite a commercial, but I'm sure this video did well for the
airline's budget.

Posted August 2014
Air NZ is giving fans a sneak peek at its next inflight safety
video, an epic tale which will conclude the airline’s highly
successful three year association with The Hobbit Trilogy.
The video will celebrate the third and final film in The Hobbit
Trilogy – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and the
airline’s partnership with the film franchise and feature cameo
appearances from director Sir Peter Jackson, Weta Workshop
co-founder Sir Richard Taylor and cast members of the films.
The yet to be titled safety video was shooting this week amidst
dramatic Central Otago, New Zealand scenery under the direction
of Taika Waititi of Boy and What We Do in the Shadows fame.
Taika Waititi will also make a special cameo appearance as ‘The
Wizard’.
Air New Zealand Chief Marketing and Customer Officer Mike Tod
says the video will be a real celebration of Middle-earth and
all that it has to offer.
“Air New Zealand has been the official airline of Middle-earth
for more than a decade now and we want to mark the final film in
The Hobbit Trilogy in a very special way. This video brings
together iconic New Zealand film locations with some of the
famous faces and Taika Waititi’s signature directing style. We
can’t wait to unveil it on board later this year,” says Mr Tod.
Air New Zealand has invested several million dollars into global
marketing campaigns and initiatives to celebrate the Hobbit
films and attract visitors to New Zealand including branding two
Boeing 777-300 long haul aircraft with Hobbit imagery.
The airline’s latest safety video follows on from the highly
successful An Unexpected Briefing released in 2012 which has
become a global hit, with more than 12 million views online.
The new safety video is expected to be rolled out across the
airline’s fleet from late October.

Air New Zealand’s epic safety video via Weta Workshop
clocks up 16 million views in one week
Wednesday 29, October 2014
With close to 120,000 people viewing it online every hour, Air
New Zealand’s latest Hobbit-inspired safety video, The Most Epic
Safety Video Ever Made, has become the airline’s most popular
video to date, clocking up a record 16 million online views
within a week of release. […]
The large-scale viewing of the safety video reflects the fans
enthusiasm for the December release of the highly anticipated
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, a production of New
Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM).
The video has been viewed by more than eight million viewers on
YouTube, six million on Facebook and a further 1.6 million on
Youku in China. It has also been featured in numerous media
outlets worldwide including CNN, NBC News, the Daily Mail and
The Telegraph.
Air New Zealand head of global brand development Jodi Williams
says the airline is thrilled by the popularity of the video.
Says Williams: “We set out to make the most epic airline safety
video ever to celebrate our three-year partnership with The
Hobbit films and the uptake has been just that. The number of
people watching it, the feedback from customers and the coverage
generated by global media outlets has been outstanding.”
The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made has quickly eclipsed the
airline’s first Hobbit-inspired safety video, An Unexpected
Briefing (2012) which clocked up more than 12 million global
online views.
