       What happened to the other actor?

       Sources say that James Rolleston was not originally cast as Boy,
       and he was instead an extra. Another actor was already in place
       to play Boy. However, after a costume fitting, Taika gave
       Rolleston an audition, and he ended up getting the part instead.
       I'm wondering who this other kid was who was originally cast,
       and what happened to him? I'm totally happy with Rolleston's
       performance, but I'm wondering what led him to being chosen.

       The preparations to shooting the movie were taking too long and
       the kid who was initially cast was growing too old, some facial
       hair under his nose started to show up and the filmmakers felt
       that they needed a new kid. They re-auditioned James and were
       very impressed by his natural talents and how he resembled the
       character. The original kid is still in the film. I'm not sure,
       but I think he plays Kingi, the bully. I'd have to find the
       source to be sure... or maybe Taika says it in the DVD
       commentary.

       I would've liked to see the audition tape of Manihera since Boy
       is a pretty different character from Kingi, and I would've liked
       to see how his performance as Boy would've differed from
       Rolleston.

       We'll never know that now, although Boy is not much different
       from Kingi. Look at how he sometimes treats his younger brother,
       Rocky. Boy is a bully as well.

       Boy is a bit of a bully at times, but nowhere near the extremes
       of Kingi, although I take your point.
