Steadfast: The Story of Aidene Lars
By: DolittleMax Date: July 14, 2020, 7:06 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This story begins where one might expect it to. A home somewhere
in the mountains in a worn hut in the snow; light radiates from
the windows into the snowy night as the cries of a newborn fill
the home.
Marianne Faeslaug, now Marianne Lars, holds her daughter to her
chest and gasps with the afterpangs of childbirth. Her arms are
thin and her face worn many years older than what she was. Her
husband, a doting man stood at her side and watched as his
daughter cried and looked up at him with those Draconian eyes.
His smile shook with emotion and the babe now settled, eyes
slipping shut as she rested against her mother’s chest.
“W-we did it Therin... she’s here”
“Shhhh my love” he chuckled, biting back tears “rest now. You’ve
done well my Heart”
Wordlessly, he took his daughter from his wife’s arms to wrap
her up tightly in cloths, allowing his exhausted wife to sleep.
The cradle he had built was by his side of the bed and he placed
her in carefully, trembling with the fear he might break her if
he were not gentle enough. He stood over the crib for a long
while, eyes watching the little movements of his daughter in
utter infatuation. She was so small, so precious and he all at
once knew what it meant to be a father. To be prepared to
sacrifice his life in the hopes that she might even smile upon
him.
It was safe to say that Therin loved his wife as completely as
he loved his wife; her passing had nearly broken him in two.
Marianne was an ailing woman and it was risky for her to have
even attempted to conceive, let alone conceive a drake’s spawn.
She had an illness of the blood that meant she was often very
weak and very tired. Many failed pregnancies had scared Therin
and haunted his wife but she insisted on trying. When they had
found out she was pregnant again, Therin had originally begged
that she try and miscarry. For her sake. As time went on
however, and her stomach swelled, Therin grew optimistic.
Aidene’s birth had taken a toll on the woman, but Marianne held
on long enough to see the child weaned and witness the first
signs of teeth in the little pink gums.
That winter was a harsh one, and living solely off Therins hunts
and trying to keep the house warm took a toll on all of them,
especially his wife. By the time spring came the ground had
thawed just in time for her burial. It was time to move on, to
return to civilisation and make a life for the only thing left
to care for in this world.
Aidene.
Lars has connections from his youth, a former member of an
organisation that he’d been a great part of in his earlier
years. Now, unable to maintain the hermit life he and his wife
had settled on it was time to return to what he knew. The art of
hired killing.
One might argue that an assassins guild was no place to raise a
child let alone a young girl but what did Therin know of rearing
children? What he knew was that the guild was loyal to those who
were loyal to it and his daughter would not only have he looking
after her, but every assassin in the guild. His suspicions had
proven correct and before telling, Aidene was known to all and
adored by all. She was spoiled for attention and never a moment
passed where she was not being fostered and grown as a young
lady. She wasn’t the smartest of children, and as she grew into
a teen she often compensated for this with her enthusiasm and
stubbornness. The women of the keep taught her the things of
women and the men gave her such valued wisdom that she would
hold with her for the rest of her days.
However it came to a time where Aidene has reached her
eighteenth year. Her role in the guild was now being brought
into question. Aidene was a skilled fighter for sure but she
lacked in some areas.
“She’s simply not of the mental caliber we need Therin” Farren
sighed once more, rubbing his temples. Draconian males could be
bullheaded and stubborn as hell.
“Are you calling Aidene stupid?” the drake’s eyes flashed in
challenge and scales formed along his neck and cheeks.
“Of course not Therin- don’t be an ass. What I’m saying is she
lacks a certain measure of restraint and ability to follow
orders”
“Name one example of that. Go on. Try find one you weasle!”
Farren simply slipped on his glasses and opened his little
notebook of his.
“The 14th of last month. Burnt a table to ashes in the dining
room simply because someone gave her insult. 16th of last month.
Reprimanded for directly disobeying the Guildmasted and going
into a tavern that was about to be skirmished. 17th of last
month. Burnt another young adult for quote/unquote staring. 21st
of last month-“
“I get it” Therin ground out in annoyance
“What I’m saying is, she’d be far better off in an area that
used her charm, her looks and her ability to kill. The courtesan
division-“
Farren was cut off by a blade soaring to strike him in the
chest, instead the male blocked it with his wrist guard. The
young man was grabbed by the throat and pinned into the stone
wall behind him.
“You want to make my daughter a harlot?!”
Farren grimaced and glared at the man holding him, “If she does
as she’s told- ugh- she won’t ever have to get to a point where
she has to sleep with a man-“
The grip simply tightened around his throat and Farren had to
take action. He drew in his feet before launching them out
against Therin’s chest, making the man drop him. Farren drew his
own blades as he gasped for breath and made to attack.
“What in GODS name is going on here!?” thundered a voice from
behind them. Farren and Therin looked to the door, seeing the
Guildmasted. Both of them stood up and straightened there
clothes to try and look orderly.
“Nothing, Yovich...” muttered Farren
“Nothing? That’s a lot of aggression for ‘nothing’” he said
coldly “What happened Therin”
“This as*hat won’t accept my daughter into the training group.
She’s 18 now and can join their ranks”
“She doesn’t have what it take Yovich- She’llbe killed or
worse... captured”
Yovich looked at the two men, “Farren’s understanding of the
pschye and what it takes to make an assassin is vast. He has
trained three of the most successful and effective assassins in
the history of this guild. I trust his judgement.”
“But she hasn’t even had a chance to show what she’s capable
of-“
“She has lives among us. We know her better than we know our own
families. If there was something to make an assassin of Farren
would have full knowledge of it”
“She can’t be in the courtesans division. I will not have it”
“Then she must leave. She serves no purpose to the Guild and is
a liability and drain of resources”
“Surely she can have some other part“
“There is no other role” Farren snapper aggressively, though
halting any further comment when Yovich held a hand up for
silence.
“You dare challenge my authority Therin Lars?”
Lars simply held his chin high and remained silent.
“Then I propose a bet. If Aidene passes her training within the
top three of her class she may remain”
“I-if she doesn’t?” Therin asked, knowing it wasn’t going to be
so simple.
“Then you both leave”
“Leave?”
“You’ll be barred from the Guild”
Therin blinked in shock, but his gaze narrowed in determination
as he looked at Farren and Yovich.
“Deal.”
