Damon paused momentarily to wipe sweat from his brow and halted
when he thought he heard the door open. He shrugged it off,
figuring if it was someone they would have called out to him by
now. He resumed his hammering with gritted teeth and acute
concentration. He eyed the way the metal lost glow and began to
become hard, making sure to send another wave of magis through
it to keep it hot and mouldable.
The shout from in the store made him fumble a stroke, the hammer
glancing off to the side awkwardly, making him curse with
resignation as he sat the blade in the furnace to keep warm.
Wiping his hands on his apron he walked out into the shop,
glancing at one of the regulars as he wiped sweat from his
       forehead on his sleeve.
“I though I told you three days for that horseshoe. I’m booked
up for the next two days. You’re lucky I knew you’d come
       knocking and already smelted-“
His gaze finally landed on Vanessa and he blinked for a moment,
brain not quite agreeing with what his eyes saw.
       “I- I won’t be a moment Vanessa just-“
Damon ducked into the back room, emerging with the customers
goods and quickly settling the price before they left.
“What can I do for you?” He asked, remaining pleasant. While
what she had said had hurt, he didn’t necessarily hold it
against her. Some people were raised to be like that, and he
just assumed she knew nothing else.

Damon stared at the hammer a moment, blinking at it in
confusion. It was not the kind of hammer he used often, more one
for details or putting rivots in leather. He then glanced back
to Vanessa and noted the demure stars at her feet and his brow
furrowed in confusion. Was this an apology? He took a small
breath before taking the hammer, “Thank you, I will put it in my
       tools...” he said.
He watched her a moment more before giving a sigh, “Look, I
don’t hold it against you. Trust me, I’m used to that kinda
thing. It just hadn’t happened for a while- well, since I moved
here. There’s no need to apologise for what your status means I
guess. Not your fault you’re not meant to associate with
commoners or whatever. So don’t worry about it....”
He stood there a moment longer in the silence, “Is there
anything else I can help with today?”

Damon watched her as she wandered about his shop for a minute,
and seemed to want to say something. He wasn't going to force
her to be his friend of course but if she felt that the class
gap between them was too vast, he'd concede. When she asked if
they could talk he gave her a smile and nodded.
"Indeed, but I must keep working as we do. I've got plenty of
       orders to fill before sundown."
He sat at a bench and began to work leather strips around the
handle of a battle-axe. He wove them around the steel handle as
a softer spot for the user's hand to grip onto. He continued to
do this, gesturing to another stool for her to take a seat if
she wished. His eyes remained on his work as he plaited the
       leather with deft fingers.

Damon dropped the leathers in surprise, accidentally letting
them unravel slightly. He blinked and looked at her in some
confusion, wondering if he’d heard quite right.
“M-me? Sing? I...” he thought about it and rubbed the back of
       his neck bashfully.
“I’ve only sung in pubs and for friends before- never in front
       of a crowd. A-a-and besides, I haven’t had any training, I’m
nowhere near your level. I simply can’t”
He gave her a nervous smile and took up the leather in his hands
again, “I’m flattered by the offer but you really don’t have to.
I’ve already forgiven you for... well. For before; you don’t
need to do this to try and earn my forgiveness”
Damon quickly tied off the leather straps and looked back to
       her.

He flushed a little as he realised his misunderstanding- of
course, how stupid of him. Instead he listened to her actual
proposal with some interest, once more setting to work on the
grip of the axe. A stage hand? I could prove interesting... and
he would be able to work it in around his store hours after all.
It was also extra money toward his ‘future fund’ as he now
called it. It would in be a few months until he had enough money
to move to Alessandria and then another few before he could buy
       a house.
He rubbed at the stubble forming along his chin and thought
       about it carefully.
“Hmm, I am in a good mind to accept this offer” he said looking
       at her.
       “When do I start?”

Damon had arrived in the evening wearing simple clothes. He
wasn’t sure what being a stage-hand required but he assumed it
was hard work. He had made an effort to clean up; his hair was
combed, his face clear of soot and his clothes free of burns. He
wore a plain set of black trousers, white shirt and a red
kerchief around his neck to absorb any sweat he might exert with
whatever he would be doing that night.
He had been hustled backstage to meet up with the rest of the
crew. Somehow he managed to stumble his way about and found
himself in front of Vanessa who gave a wave. He waved back, but
giving her a confused look as she called him ‘Lord Roux.’ He
decided to say nothing on it though. Instead he looked to the
stern woman behind her a gave a slight wave, rocking on his
       heels awkwardly.
“Ah, Lady Delcroix. Nice to make your acquaintance. If you’d be
so kind as to point me in the direction of what I’m meant to do,
       I’d be most grateful”

Damon had quickly been bustled into work and before long he was
already in the swing of thing. Some of the crew appreciated his
smith knowledge and before long he was writing himself a list of
replacement parts they would need for things; pulleys, clamps
etc. now, he’d been placed on the curtain, ready to haul it up
at the right time. Damon remained quiet as he stood there, hands
around the rope. In the dark he could make out the lone figure
on stage and he gave a small smile, knowing it to be Vanessa. A
nudge to his ribs made him aware that it was time...
Hand over hand he hauled on the curtain, watching it rise
       steadily until it disappeared.
No wonder people paid so much to watch her; not only was she
beautiful but her voice was angelic and carried across the room.
Damon kept quiet and watched from his side, applauding when the
       audience applauded.

Damon came forward with a warm smile and nodded to both Vanessa
and her friend, noticing the banter between them but not hearing
a word of it. He had admired the performance greatly as she had
sung well. Though he seemed to notice she didn’t sing as freely
as she did out in the open air when no one was watching, this
was definitely a performance for paying crowds. He gave a wave
       and then a small bow.
“That was a fantastic performance. The crowd loved it-“ he
paused as he realised that made it sound like he didn’t like it
“Oh- I-I liked it too of course. Very nice.”
He showed his palms face up, they were red with rope burn and he
gave a sheepish chuckle, “Next time I shall bring my gloves,
       no?”
He stood there awkwardly a few moments as the women stared at
him, “I uh- I should probably head home? I have an early start
tomorrow, of course at the...” he remembered that perhaps his
occupation wasn’t something he should mention. After all,
Vanessa had introduced him as ‘Lord Roux’ which he was not of
course. Perhaps it was best to share little of himself.
