       "There's not anywhere I wouldn't want to go back to in
       particular," Septimus replied after some consideration.
       "Traveling with Gen, I tended to see both the best and the worst
       of a city or country. We went to Uleplex, and for every
       religious zealot that wanted to wipe any non-Heli from the
       planet, there were ten people who were just trying to get by and
       were willing to offer their homes to strangers for some extra
       money or help with chores."
       He sighed. "People don't seem to realize that the first places
       affected by an evil warlord or a genocidal religion are the
       places where such people make their homes. The Alessandrian
       people think of Uleplex and think that everyone there is a
       member of the Church, and they don't realize that the Church has
       killed families and even entire villages that didn't bend to
       their ideal. I don't relish staying in Blæshavn or the Emerald
       Keep, but I don't hate the people that live there, for the most
       part."

       Asena listened to him voice his opinions on Uleplex and Embra
       and that made her give a small nod. He was not wrong. The world
       tended to cling to the views that a rotten few consumed the
       majority. And Asena was guilty of it. After seeing what the
       Church’s corrupt members did to Damon she couldn’t find it in
       herself to care much for them. But she knew deep down that not
       every follower was bad, as well as not every person in Uleplex
       was a zealot or bad person. She shoved some of the roast in her
       mouth to give herself time to mull over her thoughts without the
       bitter edge to her tone or sardonic edge.
       “You’re right. Our society has issues with basing their views of
       the many on the most vocal and dangerous. I’d rather our bond
       with Uleplex be stronger. Hell, our bond with every other nation
       could be stronger. Batestarians despise the Alessandrians as
       much as they do Uleplexians. And I can’t tell you how Phonax
       will feel if Malachi isn’t elected. I feel like we’re all so
       divided and splintered, when we could do so much more good if we
       all could come together for a common goal. I just don’t know
       that it’s possible even if I’ll do my damndest to try.” She the
       gave Septimus a small raise of her brow then. “So then do you
       plan on remaining in Alessandria forever? If I had my choice I
       would live elsewhere, but to be in the Truce I’ll have to one
       day own an estate here...Oh and that garden you mentioned that
       is on the property, could we take a look at it tomorrow? You
       mentioned fresh fruits?” She glanced around her at Septimus’s
       dining room. A blush rose to her cheeks as a funny thought
       struck her of staying there, being with him, living a life that
       she once imagined with Damon. Children to take a few of those
       empty seats at the table, that lovely fire in his sitting room
       perfect for relaxing after a long day of work, figuring out a
       hobby that didn’t involve her burning something down or
       fighting, and getting to spend time with him during the day to
       day tasks. She found herself liking that idea, even if she
       surely wouldn’t voice it. It was much too soon to be thinking of
       such things...

       "Alessandria is my home, now. I have a sphere of influence here,
       friends who both keep me company as well as challenge me, and
       rivals who only challenge me. I'll always remember where I came
       from, and I'll travel when the daily politics and the walls and
       buildings get too much for me, but I have reasons to remain
       here." With the last line, he met her eyes.
       Yes, Asena was a very good reason for him to stay. If she made
       the Truce, she would be tied to Alessandria for a long time to
       come, and he wouldn't ever want to be where she wasn't. Not now,
       not for a single day. Her other question made him smile. "Help
       yourself to the garden. It's mostly veggies, but there are a
       couple apple trees and some berry bushes as well."

       Asena understood his reasoning for staying because his life was
       there. She hoped that one day she might find a way to make
       Alessandria a home. She never really had one place where she
       could plant her roots, but perhaps if she won the Truce seat
       this would be her chance to do such. She was mid sipping her
       wine again when she caught that look from him. Asena blushed as
       she met his eyes, her imagination getting away from her at what
       he could mean by that look. She wondered if he felt the same as
       she did. The idea made her glance away, the Asena Valda reduced
       to a fluttery, twittery young woman that smiled at her food as
       her eyes averted. "Beyond the Truce, I can think of a few
       myself..." She said, pushing a potato with her fork to keep her
       hands from fidgeting.
       As for the garden, she was curious what she could find out
       there. Vegetables and some fruit. That sounded like a lovely way
       to spend tomorrow. "I will then. Maybe take a picnic out there
       or a book and enjoy it under the trees. I'll need a
       recommendation of course. I just value a calm day. If you're not
       busy with work you are more than welcome to join." She said, to
       have an excuse for more time with him. The usual her would have
       already said as much, but she knew she needed to be more
       tactful.

       Septimus smiled and nodded. "I would be delighted, dear." He
       quietly poured himself another glass of wine, thinking some
       thoughts that were very tempting. "Would you like more wine,
       Asena? And then maybe we can... retire for the night?" He
       glances up at her through his eye lashes, trying to get a read
       on her expression.

       Asena returned his smile, a warmth settling in her middle at his
       agreement to spend more time with her. The company was
       appreciated when some days she felt like she had things together
       and quickly things might turn the other way. She didn't let that
       worry dwell long in her mind before she toyed with her glass.
       Dinner was complete and there was no real reason to linger.
       Should she say goodnight and let them go their separate ways?
       Should she insist on continuing where they left off on the
       shoreline and dominate more of his attention for the evening?
       Was all of that moving far too quickly and was she being
       irresponsible again like she had been with...She shoved down the
       thought as it tread to closely to areas she was still healing.
       Besides, she knew Septimus had some desire for her after all the
       time they spent together. That much was clear now when he spoke
       up, offering her more wine and....Well, the look in his eyes
       spelled there was something else to the request. Her smile
       shifted to something more kittenish as his green eyes met her's,
       her own narrowing some as her lips pursed in thought. "Another
       glass would be fantastic. As for retiring..." She gauged her
       options and felt that she was older and wise enough to make a
       decisive start. Besides, Asena was raised to be much blunter and
       that was something she was trying to work on. "Is that all you
       wish to do Lord Viannacelli? The night is still young and I do
       love your company...."

       Septimus smiled a bit as he saw that Asena had gotten his
       intent. He reached over to pour her more wine. "We can bring the
       bottle and glasses with us, I think. We can still retire, but we
       don't have to go immediately to sleep." He was being more
       forward than his usual self, he knew. With Asena he didn't feel
       that he needed to be coy or to talk in riddles. He could let his
       politician's brain rest and be blunt with her, at least in
       private. "I suppose the question is truly thus; your quarters or
       mine, dear?"

       Asena was pleased Septimus was saving the honeyed words for
       their courtly appearances and public. When he had her alone, he
       didn’t need to worry about hiding his intent behind floral
       language as it honestly would confuse or frustrate her. And that
       would only serve to ruin their lovely evening. So instead, he
       poured another glass and confirmed her thinking. Oh, whatever
       were they to do with all that free time awake? The question of
       who’s quarters to retire to gave her a few ideas/
       “Hm,” The hum carried her from her seat to his side of the
       table, a hand holding her now filled glass, “I’ve thoroughly
       explored the guest quarters so I do know an excelled spot that
       would make...retiring more comfortable for the evening.” With
       some grace she perched on the edge of the table, one hand going
       to his face while the other set her glass down. Asena leaned a
       bit, hovering closer to him and eyeing his lips as if she were
       curious about them.
       “If it’s my choice for the evening, I say your quarters.” Her
       eyes flicked up to his, meeting them steadily. “I’m curious to
       see it. They say a bedroom is an intimate look into a person, as
       it’s where they’re most comfortable.” The flirtation in her tone
       was solidified by the kiss she gave him, one that was meant to
       draw his attention further into her.
       However, instead of lingering, she pulled away and slipped the
       bottle from him with a wey smile. Best to tease him and leave
       him wanting a little more...even if currently her mind did
       wander to bolder ways to really keep his attention on her. As
       she rose, she collected her glass as well, figuring he could
       manage to grab his glass on his own. Asena paid extra care to
       her walk, enjoying adding a certain careless sway to her hips as
       she cast a look over her shoulder.
       “Coming, Sept?” She asked in a tone that was too suggestive to
       be innocent.

       The man watched as Asena made her way to the door, and he he
       loved every second of that watch. As she turned and asked if he
       was coming, he rose from his seat in a flash. He snatched up his
       wine glass and hurried to follow her. He gave quick orders to
       the servants waiting to clean up after them, and then made his
       way to his rooms.
       The quarters were nice, if a bit bare. The bed looked like it
       struck a fine balance between plush and firm, comfortable for
       almost anyone to sleep in, and was decorated in fine green and
       gold silks. There was a writing desk in one corner next to a
       smaller bookshelf than the ones elsewhere in the house, and a
       hearth in the middle of the room provided steady warmth.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       As they made their way to the quiet of his room, she sipped her
       glass absentmindedly, letting her eyes wander to the halls to
       keep from looking at the man beside her. Asena wasn't a shy
       woman, but Septimus always made her heart flutter in this way
       that reminded her of the girlish shyness she got in the early
       days of her fumblings at romance. She couldn't have Septimus
       thinking she was some twittery girl. So when they reached the
       room, she gave it a glance lips pulling into an interested smile
       at the space. So he was a minimalist, much like herself, that
       preferred the basics rather than exorbitant funds spent on
       decoration. Of course, he had a desk and books to further fuel
       his reading habits. Maybe she should take a trip to the local
       book and artifact shop to see about getting him some new
       material. Her eyes were then drawn to the fire there in the
       hearth, a sigh pulling through her at the warmth of the room.
       And lastly, the bed. she took in the silky looking sheets of a
       deep foresty green that reminded her of the woodlands near her
       home. The golden threads caught the amber light filtering from
       the fire and made the bed look so warm and inviting. However,
       she knew she was letting herself get distracted by the things in
       the room and not the man who it belonged to. That wouldn't do.
       She took a healthy drink from her glass, moving to the bed to
       set it on the side table. "I must say this fits what I expected.
       Not in a bad way of course." She then turned her attention back
       to him, making sure to get back into his space to be sure she
       was within reach of him. Asena let her hands find his, her eyes
       searching his face once more to be sure he was alright with
       this. While she certainly was, she knew she couldn't force that
       will to move things along on others. She was okay to wait for
       him or figure things out more before sex and intimacy was added
       into the equation. It certainly made things more complicated for
       her at least. He wasn't fighting her or scolding her, so she
       assumed he was okay. Besides, he was certainly strong enough to
       stop her if he wanted. "But it isn't really that intimate look
       into Septimus I was looking for." She with the teasing out of
       the way, she dragged him along with her to the bed, deciding she
       had been patient enough to earn getting his shirt off at the
       very least.
       ~~~~~~~
       The morning light was thankfully contained behind the heavier
       curtains, keeping Asena comfortable and content where she slept.
       Even if the woman ran a few degrees hotter than most, she felt
       like she was freezing even in the room with a hearth. It caused
       her to curl closer to the man in bed with her, the solid form
       that had the warmth she was chasing. Besides warmth, the feel of
       having Spetimus close was comforting, blended with pleasurable
       as feelings from the night before surfaced in her subconscious.
       Well, she finally took the arrow full force to the heart and
       confirmed that Septimus was more important to her than she had
       ever really allowed herself to admit. It was an odd sense of
       belonging that she found in his home and now his bed that made
       her not wish to leave. Even if she knew that soon the servants
       would be pestering for them to leave and not take a whole day in
       bed. She had already heard an inquisitive knock a bit ago, which
       had stirred her enough to move closer to Sept. But she was sure
       another would be along to speak about breakfast or something
       along those lines. Asena's stomach tightened a bit at that and
       she gave a bit of a pitiful groan. Okay, maybe the excess of
       wine and activity wasn't the best to prevent a hangover headache
       or mild nausea, but she found at least the room was still calm
       and quiet for the time being...
