Re: Chapter 0.9: Duty and Disobedience

Dimitri was trying to get the larger pieces of glass off the
floor when he saw a pair of unfamiliar shoes in his periphery.
He looked up and his face flushed at the sight of Nesryn. Great,
she got to see him looking like a moron yet again. Could he not
just have a moment to look suave and put together around her for
once? She looked quite in beautiful in blue, the color
accentuating her elven features and pale skin. He saw she knelt
by him, helping to clean up the mess he made with an older table
cloth. The wordlessly offered help made him smile a bit as he
got the last bit of glass up.
The teasing about his appearance made him give a chuff of
laughter. That cheeky look looked good on her and made him
notice how cute she looked when she was being devious. He
straightened a little, trying to think of a witty response when
she was suddenly in his space and dabbing at his clothing. There
was a bit too much liquid on him for that, but he wasn't about
to tell her that and make her stop. "Ah ha very funny Nesryn. If
you must know I was coming up with a secret plan on how to stop
this atrocious wedding from happening. You just saw plan A. How
do you think I did? Surely I'm not the only one that thinks this
is a sorry joke on the whole institution." He asked with his own
humor before he cleared his throat, deciding perhaps he could be
a little more honest with her. Maybe it was okay to be a little
more forward with her if his harmless flirting hadn't driven her
away before. "Truth be told. My mind was elsewhere and Avery had
the misfortune of being in the way. I may have been thinking of
a certain lady and wondered how she was doing..." He looked her
over before he gave a slight smile. "You seem fine and you look
lovely today." He then gave a shrug since his complimenting
might get him in trouble, so he resigned to stop teasing her at
this moment. "As much as I appreciate the help, I think I better
go find another shirt." He began working what he had on off,
since he didn't want to track water all over the house and risk
"ruining" the wood floors. His shirt and coat were sopping but
hell, most wouldn't pay him mind and the servants quarters were
nearby. "I'm headed to the servants quarters and then possibly
sneaking off to avoid training if you want to join? Or do they
have you doing something ridiculous too?" He asked her, offering
up the chance of getting out of work for at least part of the
day since he personally wasn't in the mood to pretend like any
of this that was happening to Luna was okay.

She seemed to assess his ‘plan’ to destroy the wedding, tilting
her head for a moment.
“I don’t think that would work for some reason... just a hunch.
But yes... this wedding seems more like a contract than a
celebration”
Luna seemed resigned to it more of less. She hadn’t openly
expressed that she wasn’t happy with what was going on, but she
was quieter and ventured into the gardens less. These were not
good signs, not to mention her ‘episodes’ were becoming more
frequent. Many a time Nesryn has stood by Luna’s side as she
followed invisible objects in the air. The woman had an odd
gift... of what purpose she could not tell.
Nesryn dabbed away some more at his shirt when he separated
himself to remove his coat, his real reasoning for his
distraction making her pause in front of him speechlessly. He
was thinking of her? No- Perhaps he worried after Marcella,
since she had started in the kitchen? The comment about her
appearance nearly made her scold him, but before she could get a
suitable reprimand out Dimitri Valcrow saw it fit to remove his
shirt.
Her eyes glued to his hands as tugged at the sopping wet
material from his torso. She would have moved back a step but it
would seem she was a little distracted by what she saw. He was
nicely toned- not in the ridiculous way some men in the guild
made themselves -but in a way that looked something akin to
smooth, sculpted marble. A water droplet drew her eyes across
his chest to follow as it slid down his chest to disappear past
the waist of his pants. Her ears dusted red again as she forced
her gaze away, looking elsewhere in the room.
With a blink, she realised he was speaking again and simply
nodded, not quite realising what he was saying until they walked
a little further.
“N-no. I have little to do until the wedding day besides to look
after Luna. At this point she is ina dress fitting with her
mother and sisters. I was told not to disturb”
As they walked down the hall to the servants quarters, Nesryn
let her eyes glance to him a few times, secretly admiring and
examining his form. His skin seemed flawless and smooth, so much
so that she found herself wondering at what it might feel like
to reach out a touch his shoulder. Nesryn saw however, Lacey
approach. Ever the coy flirt she was she also seemed to
appreciate the view and hid her mouth behind a hand as she
giggle and paused to watch them (him) make their way down the
hall. The assassin felt an odd burn in her stomach and she
quickly flung a tablecloth at him, her expression turning back
to that passive and almost annoyed expression.
“Don’t be ridiculous, you’ll catch a cold. Then what use will
you be at the wedding other than to spread the plague?” her pace
quickened a little as they walked.

Dimitri didn't notice the look from Lacey and simply gave her a
small nod of greeting. He was a bit too caught up in Nesryn and
the fact that she actually seemed keen on spending time with him
today. It sounded like her schedule was clear so why not take
advantage of it? However, he was a bit shocked to be pelted by a
table cloth. He peeked at her from under the fabric, trying to
understand why her pace had quickened so. Had he said something
stupid again? "True it would be awfully hard to irritate you if
I'm dead. But the plague? Nes, I doubt I'm catching anything in
Upper Vilvella. The streets practically smell like bathing
powders." He said before hurrying to catch up with her.
When they made it to the servants quarters, he held up a hand to
tell her he would be back as he went to his own quarters. Once
inside, he quickly pulled a shirt from the mix of things he
owned and fussed with his appearance some. After all, he
couldn't look water logged if he intended to make a good
impression on her now could he? He rubbed his hair dry with a
towel but frowned when that only brought out the natural
waviness to his hair that he tried to smooth back into place.
Amon preserve him he looked like a teenager fretting over his
hair before just hanging out with a woman. He finally gave a
defeated huff and made his way back to Nesryn with a bright
smile as he buttoned the shirt back up, draping the coat over
his arm.
"I suppose you haven't seen much of the streets of Upper
Vilvella?" He asked, wondering if she had lived in Alessandria
or come here like he had. "While I can't get us off the property
with the increase in panic over this wedding, I might know a
nice place to get a view and a good place to have a decent lunch
if you would like?" He offered since while he would like to show
her the fun spots in Vilvella, he felt that she would turn that
down. So the next alternative was a middle ground, lunch with
her on the roof access of the property that was quiet, pretty,
and secluded. There she could escape off if she wished, as she
seemed to be forming a habit of doing if he was too blunt with
her...

Nesryn decided it best not to comment on what he smelt like or
perhaps what he might catch in the streets of the city. Perhaps
she had been a little abrupt but Nesryn was simply protecting
his dignity from the gossip prone, golden haired, perfect
looking servant. At least, that is what she told herself. His
playful use of the word ‘irritate’ and the way he shortened her
name made her look at him with a slight twitch of annoyance. Not
for anything he said but rather how much he really got under her
skin and made her fell that odd light feeling. As he went to
change into dry clothes, she stood by the fireplace and stared
into it quietly. The heat warmed her face and the sound of it
relaxed her.
Finally, when he emerged, she let her hands brush her skirt
flat. Her eyes went to his face and then up to his hair. There
was a wave to it and she spotted a sole curl upon the crown of
his head. She wouldn’t mention it out of fear he’d pay it down
and destroy it. It moved as he moved and she felt a small tug of
amusement at the sight. She had been to Alessandria many times,
though the upper Vivella area was lesser known to her. Why not
take the opportunity to go outside and get some fresh air.
“Indeed, an outing would be quite fitting” she agreed “I’ve had
little time for such thing.”
Nesryn gestured for Dimitri to lead the wag.

Elation flooded Dimitri at her accepting his offer. A part of
him hoped that this was a sign she didn’t mind him, while
another part felt this might be a sign she was settling into the
life here. Maybe, with enough time, she might consider him a
friend? That seemed reasonable enough To expect from the
assassin. That thought was a bit humbling but also a happy one
that drew a smile to him that was warm and cheerful.
“Awesome, this way then, Nesryn.” He gestured for her to follow
and they headed towards one of the well guarded exits of the
home. With some chatting and convincing, Dimitri was able to
talk the guard into letting them out. Though Dimitri did catch
the looks he got since few expected anyone to get close to
Luna’s guard. Dimitri had heard from his sister that people
thought she was standoffish, intense, and were nervous she might
view them as a threat if they got to close. Dimitri of course
denied this adamantly, but his sister had her prejudices. There
wasn’t much he could say to change her mind, especially not when
it came to Elvi nor anything that didn’t align with Frieda’s
beliefs.
As they walked down the less than crowded street near the
property, Dimitri decided to fill the silence with speech. He
knew she didn’t quite like all his talking but he felt she
should at least know what the plan was. “So there’s this tea
house near here that makes amazing foods. The owner is Elviyenne
and her rose tea is actually one of Luna’s favorites. Though
with a little sweet talking she can be convinced to let people
use the private part of the shop.” He said before he decided to
change the subject before he ruined the whole moment by talking
too much. “So, have you been in Alessandria long? Before you
Started with Luna that Is.” He asked since he wasn’t sure what
was okay to talk about with her. She seemed to have a very
checkered past and some things that were notably a sore spot for
her. He didn’t want to ruin this ‘outing’ by making her upset.

It was a relatively nice day outside; there was a gentle breeze
that would have been cold if not for the warm sun. People were
out and about doing their business and going about their lives.
It seemed surreal to think that people lived like this... this
simple existence with only their own lives to worry about. Her
thoughts were brought to a halt when Dimitri went off on one of
his little verbal wanders, speaking of Elviyenne and tea and
things.
A tea house? Nesryn has never been to a place that exclusively
sold tea, she’d also never tried rose tea. Though, from the
scent of it when she brought it to Luna- when untinged by poison
-seemed pleasant enough. The thought of Dimitri sweet talking
his way around the rules didn’t surprise her at all and as she
followed him, she wondered if his speaking was caused by nerves
or if he genuinely always had this much to say. It was fine by
her, it meant she was obligated to speak less.
Until he asked her a question of course.
“I have been to Alessandria many times, but before the contract
I was in Phonax with a different... task. So I haven’t been here
for” she quieted as she calculated “fifteen or so years. I was
only here a week before joining the household” This number of
how long it had been since her last visit only hinted out how
old the woman really was; after all she was Elviyenne.
Nesryn didn’t know how Dimitri would feel about her if he knew
the ins and outs of her work. While she was in Phonax she hadn’t
been contracted to kill. No, she was waiting for word on her
next task while investigating something of her own interest.
“Is this the tea house?” she said gesturing to a lovely bright
building.

Dimitri didn’t really pay the noise around them much mind, as he
wasn’t one to really observe his surroundings. There wasn’t
really a need to when you walked the same paths everyday and
visited the same places. He believed he might be able To
navigate Marieve blindfolded by now. However, he could also
attribute his keen lack of awareness to his company. It was hard
not to get caught up in Nesryn.
Her response briefly confused him till he remembered that
Elviyenne lived quite a long time. Right, so 15 years to her was
probably hardly a blink. He was in Marieve at that point, but
just barely, as a child sold to the Whitheres. He knew that some
people around Erudi had views against interracial couples, but
he didn’t care at all for it. In fact, he appreciated the
experience and thought the Elvi had and wish he had a bit more
himself.
He was about to ask why she was in Phonax until she pointed out
the tea house. Oh, seems he had gotten distracted again!
“Yes actually. Come on, I’ll see if I can’t find Veloss.” He
went with Nesryn into the tea house and spotted the dark haired
Elviyenne woman in an apron serving tea to a customer at her bar
side. She spotted Dimitri and she gave a wave, a smile tugging
at her rosy lips. The woman looked young and petite for her age,
even if she had lived some odd 70 years. Dimitri had struck up a
friendship with her, with its own side benefits back when they
both were younger and wounded people. Now everything was
platonic with a little flirtation just to tease the other.
“Veloss, looking elegant as usual, I see.” He said in broken
Ithyril, getting a snicker from Veloss.
“And your flattery has gotten almost as bad as your Ithyril.
Maybe if you visited me more you wouldn’t be out of practice
with both.” Her teasing response made him shrug with a grin
since he knew he wasn’t great with either but he managed well
enough. Perhaps it was his desire to be a gentleman that kept
him from being filthy around women he liked.
“I agree. I have no one to practice with. And I promise I’ll try
to be by more. Things have been busy at the house..” Her gaze
left Dimitri for Nesryn and a twinkle cake to her eye. Dimitri
knew that look and quickly gave Veloss a look of warning not to
spook Nesryn off by being too bold. The woman had a mouth on
her.
“Busy huh?” She switched back to Duthl, her attention still on
Nesryn with some playfulness. “Why can’t you practice with this
woman? She looks like a great partner for practicing Ithyril and
your cheesy pick up lines.” Dimitri blushed but was pleased she
was being tame. That could have been much much worse.
“No Nesryn is only part of the reason I’ve been busy and you
know Frieda doesn’t allow anything except French and Duthl in
the home. She’s worried we’re gossiping about her.” He then gave
a bit of a appealing look. “Actually, Nesryn here is the reason
I’m here today. Do you think you could do me a favor? She hasn’t
been to the city in 15 long years and I’m sure she’d love lunch
and view?” Dimitri batted his eyes and caught the snort of
laughter from Veloss.
“Okay okay, enough. For a fellow Elviyenne sister, sure. Just
don’t say I don’t do anything for you.” Dimitri grinned when she
easily gave in, motioning them to follow her behind the counter.
Up a few flights of stairs was a door that led to the roof.
There a table sat, one clearly used for employees but for now
they could make due together.
Over the railing there was a pristine view of upper and lower
Vilvella due to the elevation that the tea house sat on. Dimitri
honestly lived the view from up there, especially on a clear,
breezy day like this.
“I’ll bring up some rose tea and some of my fresh cooking from
home. I’m sure you two won’t mind a taste of Elviyenne cuisine.
It’s wasted on the Alessandrian palates.” Veloss gave a quick
bow before leaving them to it, sparing Dimitri a wink that he
read as her approving of Nesryn. He blushed a bit and passed his
gaze to her as if to check if she was alright.
“Right, well it’s nothing extraordinary but I figured it was a
nice sunny place to talk. That isn’t prone to random people
walking in that we may know.” He fidgetted with his hands a bit
as he leaned against the railing. “If that’s okay with you? I
wanted to try and get to know you a bit better since you might
be around for a while and because I’m genuinely curious.” He was
trying to be courteous but he was unsure of himself with her.
She made him feel jittery and twittery, like he might be saying
the wrong thing or like he had to impress her. That made it hard
to think if he was treading on something personal or making her
uncomfortable.

Nesryn’s eyes quickly absorbed the cafe, her ears swallowing
every conversation and her nose practically inhaling every
scent. It almost overwhelmed her for a moment, having grown used
to larger places like the Witheres home. Everything inside here
was much closer to reach. She remained a step behind Dimitri as
he waved to who she assumed was Veloss. An out her Elviyenne
woman, probably around her own age if her guess was correct. She
seemed to exude warmth and for a moment Nesryn blinked.
Does Dimitri prefer talkative women?
This line of thought was quickly interrupted by Dimitri’s
broken- but still understandable -Ithyril. The stony woman’s
delicate brow quirked involuntarily upward in amusement and
surprise. The small exchange revealed the nature of their
relationship to some extent. There was something; the cheeky and
flirtatious manner was mostly made humorous with Dimitri’s
dreadful grammar. Why hadn’t he attempted to say something to
her? His reasoning that Freida only allowed French and Duthul
cleared that up. Besides, was it racist to assume one spoke the
native tongue?
When they switched back to the common tongue and the shopkeeper
made a brief insinuation, Nesryn felt the tips of her ears heat
up, but it seemed this woman was an ally.
“I think his flirtation is just as dreadful no matter what
tongue he speaks in” she added in her home tongue. It felt
odd... when was the last time she spoke her own language?
It was a somewhat playful jab, but one could often not tell when
she wore such a quiet expression, like the one she wore now.
They were led upstairs and Nesryn great fully appreciated that
the volume and number of people up here was much less. The
promise of Elviyenne cuisine was exciting. She joined Dimitri at
the rail but kept her hands neatly clasped in front of her as
she looked out.
Dimitri now turned his attention to her, and as he inquired
after her, she felt herself tense a little. It wasn’t that she
didn’t trust him... something in her did, but from her birth she
had trained herself to remain solitary; Share little to nothing,
keep quiet and keep to yourself. The idea that someone might
want to know more about her than could be seen from the outside
was odd. With a spark of realisation she realised she knew
little of Dimitri other than what her profession would have
urged her to discover; name, birth, life and brief history.
“I wouldn’t say there is much to learn...” she said softly as
she continued to look out over the city “But for this outing,
while we are away from the home, I will answer any of your
questions”
Nesryn wasn’t sure what kind of thing he wished to know, in her
mind he knew all the things of importance. She was interested to
see what he wanted to learn.
With a side look to Dimitri she added in Ithyil “But I must be
allowed to also ask a question for each one you ask”

Dimitri was trying his best to remain collected and suave even
if one the inside he felt a bit nervous. Truly, when it got down
to it, Dimitri was hardly the most extroverted person in the
house. He was the shyest of the siblings, but the years of
training and working under Frieda has taught him to be more
outspoken. Even if what came out of his mouth wasn’t always the
most succinct or to the point...It was a symptom of that
nervousness that loomed in the back of his mind that told him
this world was built for extroverts and people who were
charming. So he tried to put that best foot forward. Nesryn was
the only one that seemed to destroy those attempts and made him
flustered instead of cool, calm, and collected like he practiced
for so many years.
A smile came to him when she agreed to let him ask questions and
that she would answer him. Though, he had noticed a small
tension in her shoulders and wondered if she thought he was
going to be intrusive or too personal. He wasn’t out to push her
to talk about things she didn’t want to, but he was trying to
maybe get to know her...to perhaps understand why he was so
fascinated with her.
He was about to ask something off the top of his head when she
spoke up in Ithyril. His face reddened at how lovely her voice
sounded in her native tongue. Almost like a song or poem in the
lilting tones and consonants. He had heard it before but not
with the same clarity he did now on the roof. He was worried a
moment what she might ask but he felt it was only fair that she
get to ask a question if he was asking her questions.
“Fair enough.” He told her back, this time trying to make sure
his pronunciation was precise, even if it sounded hardly the
same. He knew it was a skill he needed to improve, but he was
getting better and could understand more than he could speak.
“I guess to continue what I asked earlier, what did you do
before guarding Luna? You mentioned you were in Phonax.” He
asked, wondering a bit more of just what her job entailed. He
wouldn’t get detailed, as he was sure there were secrets she
couldn’t share, but perhaps the minimum could help him know what
her life was like in this guild.

Of course he started with her time in Phonax... but Nesryn made
a deal. So she took a moment before beginning.
“My time in Phonax was spent following my own trail of interest.
I was between contracts at the time meaning that I could do as I
please. You have noted that I’m not the most fond of our Lady’s
fiancé? Well... the Hythians have an underground trade; slaves,
opiates and laundered money. I happen to have a particular
disliking for slave trade” she gave a small sigh and rested her
chin in her hand.
“I was trying to catch out their supplier. After all, most of
the slaves aren’t Elviette but rather Elviyenne. I wasn’t having
much luck when I was contacted about my new contract here”
She let that information simmer while she thought of her own
question. All of a sudden, when the pressure was on she had
nothing. Surely there was something she could ask him that might
be of interest to her...
“My question would be... well. How did you get to be working in
the household? A-and why are you and your sister at such odds?”
It wasn’t much but perhaps she’d think of more to ask.
